Coral-Ann Mills, owner of Mills Accounting and Bookkeeping Services, had not planned on a career in finance.

Coral-Ann's dream was to become an opera singer and she had successfully secured funding to record an album. Coral-Ann was working part-time for Next whilst pursuing her dream, and she and partner Daniel had moved to Milton Keynes to be closer to family. Coral-Ann's dream was coming along nicely, having sung to an audience of over 800 at the MK Dons Stadium. Then life threw Coral-Ann a shock.

Whilst driving up the M1 one evening, Coral-Ann began to feel unwell. She can't remember much of what happened next but does remember the words her father had drilled into her, if ever in difficulties on a motorway get to the hard shoulder and get out of the car. It was at this point Coral-Ann had a stroke.

Life deals us difficult blows;  sometimes we need that to
find our true vocation.

As she was a young lady in her twenties, Coral-Ann's stroke went misdiagnosed at the hospital for several days. Finally given the correct treatment, Coral-Ann began to regain movement in her arm, but her leg remained without feeling. Advised not to work, and warned she would never walk again, Coral-Ann battled through her life's low point and built up the courage to pick a new direction.

Following some research, Coral-Ann discovered the ICB-accredited Home Learning College bookkeeping course that would allow her to study from home whilst going in and out of hospital for appointments. With the help and support of the tutors at Home Learning College, Coral-Ann progressed rapidly through the course, passed all her examinations, and set up Mills Accounting and Bookkeeping Services in October 2010. Coral-Ann says

"Life deals us difficult blows and sometimes we need that to find our true vocation. I am building an excellent client base and the business is growing. What I am doing now is what I want to be doing in twenty years' time."
