Sage One or Sage 50?

Hello all

I've just launched my business and need to decide between purchasing Sage One and Sage 50. One is cloud based, and the advantage of that if my laptop decides to have a breakdown the data is all still there on the cloud. Sage 50 sits in your laptop/computer so if the hardware goes wrong, I'm in trouble. One is limited to 20 clients apparently so that's an obvious limitation, but not a deal breaker for me as I plan to stay part-time and fairly small. Does anyone have any thoughts about advantages and disadvantages of either product or have you had experience with either, good or bad.

Is there any reason you prefer the cloud? (not a fan myself)

It might be worth having a look at VT transaction + (desktop) for the bookkeeping. You can get 60 day free trial and you get highly simplified version  ('cash book') for free which you can use indefinitely although it has its limitations.

 

Best bit £150 all in, one off payment, as many companies as you want. Might be worth try - its very user friendly and loads of accountants use it.

The only reason I'm thinking of cloud storage is that if my computer breaks down I would still have all my data rather than it being lost on my laptop.

I have a Client who uses Sage One and I find it quite user friendly and was surprised given Sage 50 isnt so. However, I have also used VT transaction and think thats great for desktop software and a great price.

I think you are right to go down the path of using the Cloud- I think we will all have to use some sort of cloud functionality in the future given MTD etc. For me the best advantage is that my clients and I can look at their accounts and discuss things remotely, they can run reports as and when they want and I've found it gets them more involved as they can see whats going on. Makes life a bit more flexible. 

I use Xero also- which is also very good, I'd check out a few Cloud options before you decide- most of them run free trials so you can have a play. Clearbooks is another to look at- seems quite good, not such a fan of Quickbooks though- just doesnt click with me but many love it.

 

I've been going part time for about 18 months and have just taken the plunge fully in March this year- I've seen your posts about starting up so may join you on the FB page if thats ok?

I've joined the Xero partners programme now and will try to learn to use a few of these cloud based programmes eventually.
