More clients are looking at this option. Any recommendations of tried and tested versions?

Hi Mike, Kashflow is an easy one to use and it's quite straight forward and cheap. Sage has an online version, however you have to join the Accountants club to be able to sign your client up and it is more expensive than Kashflow. The ICB software is another option but I have not used this in great detail yet. Hope this helps.

I am a partner of Xero and for anyone with no bookkeeping knowledge, the simplicity of Xero is awesome.  It's so easy to understand.

The best feature is the automatic bank and PayPal feeds, which make the bank recs faster.  The reports are quite powerful too.  I also use CapsuleCRM which integrates with Xero nicely.

Xero customer support is great and they listen to their users needs.

It's fun to use and I highly recommend it Smile

Xero was fantastic the first time I heard about it but I found it very slow (which improved once I logged on with Google chrome) and then VAT returns became a nightmare as Xero does not lock transactions so you have to be careful if your client is one of those that has invoices from previous periods suddenly turn up. However it does have some beautiful features and the customer service  is great even though I usually prefer to speak to someone rather than e-mail my questions, but I am getting used to this now......

Kelly how did you solve the problem of VAT Returns?

Hi Joy
You can enter lock dates in the financial settings.  There are two lock dates.  One is for locking the recent VAT period, the other closes off a financial year.

Anyone tried the ICB's own software?

Would look at the ICB's software, but the pricing model doesn't work for us.  Much more expensive than my current software.

add Sage to the list www.sageone.com

Yes, I just received the link about Sage online software, Wow, they will definitely knock all the other software's out of the market at £10 per month.

Will definitely investigate this as I already use Sage Hosted online version of Sage Line 50 professional for one of my clients and that is £75 per month so this version is definitely cheaper and worth investigating.

I know I'm an old-fashioned oldie but I can't get comfortable with online accounting software.  It makes me feel out of control somehow. Undecided

Come on someone, convince me.

Hi FayRose

I must say that I agree with you however I dont agree with you being and old fashioned oldie I prefer traditionalist myself Smile

There are pros and cons on both sides of the Cloud computing debate the biggest pro being that your data should always be safe as servers usually have great back up and redundancy systems.

The 2nd Big pro is the fact your data then should be able to be accessed anywhere that you have an internet connection meaning both you and the client can be up to date with no need to restore back ups.

But what happens if you loose your broadband then you have no way of getting at your data (Unless you opt for a secondary broadband system like 3G)

Just how secure is the data is my next worry big companies are vulnerble to being hacked Paypal and Amazon are good examples of this recently re the wikileaks saga. Also is the data being accessed by anyone else how would you know??

Like you FayRose I like the data to be stored locally where I can control and restrict access.

Hi Fay,

The thing is once you get into it, you would not want to use an installed software ever again. You can go on holiday and work Cool if you want. It really helps me with all my clients as I can work around my family life from anywhere in the world. This and a document management system has really helped me organise my business.

As I work from home, I need to be as paperless as possible, the system I use helps me with my filing and also have easy access to my clients data. I did invest in one called docusoft but I decided not to use it in the end as it was not online and it was quite pricey, then someone recommended dropbox, and even though its not a document management system per se, I use it as one...
For anyone looking at storing data online and having easy access including sharing files with your clients, it might be worth considering..

Ummmm, I like the idea and some of the convenience is encouraging but I'm still not totally convinced.

Thank you for your kind words Stuart, quite made my day Wink

Don't do go-away holidays Joy,  too many animals, kenelling fees are prohibitive.

I guess its a bit like mobile phones and body piercings to me ...... takes a long time to come to terms with but wouldn't be without now. Cool

Good shout on Dropbox, Joy. I use it as part of my back-up strategy, I can even access it from my mobile phone, which has proved handy on occasions.

I encourage all my clients to use it - so i get the extra 250mb of space for everyo ne who signs up
