I have taken Level II manual and computerised and considering taking the Computerised Level III, previously I have had to work through instruction manuals (with Training Link) before I could take the exam. Do i have to do this for computerised level III.

Also i am considering to take the Self Assessment exam, again do i have to do work through some manuals before taking this exam?

Hi Michelle

For Self Assessment ICB do a manual - see main site under "shop" and "text books". If you have a lot of practical experience you might manage without any study.

For Level III ICB is now saying that members should have both Manual and Computerised qualification. Probably the best way to go would be to train with appropriate materials for the Manual exam and you should then be able to complete the computerised exam without further study.

Hope this helps.

Hi Michelle and Leslie

I would not attempt to do the self assessment exam with out reading the books at it is always good to brush up on your knowledge.

Tax is always changing so studying for an exam is a very good way to make sure your knowledge is as fresh as it can be.

Many thanks for the advice, I have used SA systems for 15 years and this was the only reason for my question, I am not good at exams in examination situations.  I will look into this further..

I am looking into the purchasing of the Level III books in the "shop" does anyone know the difference between the Level III Kit and the Level III book? as they seem the same to me or will i require both to consider the Level III Manual exam?

Your comments are much appreciated... I have been in accounts for 15 years and have never had qualifications, so this is all new to me.

Hi Michelle

For Level 3 manual, I got the Kaplan Text book & Kit.
Basically, the kit has additional questions for you to try, so you get the good topic clear. I recently sat for level 3 manual, and got 93%, so in my view it is welll worth to buy both Study text & kit. Also, the kit has one of the ICB past paper.....which is always nice to prepare you for the real exam.

The book is described as a refresher manual and is not a substitute for a coarse while the kit is a set of questions. Perhaps someone at ICB could clarify further.

Even with long experience I think it is the case that examinations throw up scenarios that you are not familiar with on a day to day basis and which could result in low scoring on certain questions. What I found really helpful in preparing for my exams was obtaining and sitting a past paper by way of revision. This ensures you are familiar with subject matter being tested and can also get the paper completed within the allotted time.

It might do no harm getting a past paper and attempting the questions. You would then see if you had any weaknesses and what study might be required.

I brought the text books and couldn't get into them even though I had a good idea of what I am doing. I got some course notes from a training provider this week and am really enjoying going through them. It's not taking me long at all so much easier than the text book. Have young children (so can only do an hour or so a day) and out working in the mornings but I think I could complete the course this time next week. I'm half way through it in 2 days!

Hi all

I have over 30 yrs experience with bookkeeping & Credit control, and only last year thought it would be good to get a certificate to show on paper i can actually do the job. At 55 i'm still working for a company, there is going to come a time when i'm not employable due to age. I'm well into this home learning, but finding it very expensive, i'm with homelearning college & it's cost me £2800 already, they want £350 for Level 2 manual would it be easier to buy the books from the shop on ICB and then book an exam externally or is there an other option ? Linda

Payroll exam should be here tomorrow so keep your fingers crossed x

I would have a go at the mock on-line first and see how you go. I tried the mock and then just turned up for the exam . I did buy the text book but never used it.

Good luck with the payroll.

Hi Michelle,

if you have done the level 3 in manual bookkeeping, you shouldn't need it. i have just failed my level 3 in computerised bookkeeping but I only needed 13 points to pass, i was gutted. but i know where I went wrong and plan to  attempt it again later this year. I just bought a mock test from the ICB, and this helped enormously,

Kind Regards

Linda

I have done the job for approx 14 years and never had the encouragement to do this, however, I contacted Home Learning and they were very expensive, I went through Training Link, although they were cheaper i didnt find I had the support i thought i would have had, especially on the manual side as i had done my experience all on SA packages, if you want to do this level 2, then look around it is cheaper elsewhere... maybe its worth looking on here if you know what you are doing..

Hi Michelle,
yes the ICB has a self assessment book, manual that gives you some information. I would buy something like that, and then take the exam when you know more about it,

Hi Linda,

Just today I called Home Learning College to quote for Diploma in Payroll Management. They quoted me £1,300!

My opinion is if you've been doing bookkeeping for 30 years I'd have said Level II would be easy for you to pass. Buy the textbook though for reference.

Good luck with your payroll exam.

Hi Linda, I was also with homelearning college & paid over £1000 to do my level 1 & 2. I'm now doing my computerised level 2 & before enrolling with HLC I went through all the course providers on the website & called them all up for a quote. Instead of paying almost £500 that HLC wanted I found someone who would do it for under £300, so maybe have a look...I know it's time consuming, but you might save quite a lot of money!

Good luck with whatever you choose,
Lara

Hello Linda,
I, too started with HLC for levels 1,2 and payroll.  After that I shopped around and discovered Ideal Schools.  They are much cheaper and provide a much better service all round.  I would highly recommend them to any ICB student!
Good luck

Sorry daisy but this is for an exam so no one should reply to help you with this.  I should imagine the ICB will remove your post.

Daisy

Putting exam questions up on the forum is considered cheating the ICB have pointed this out several times in the past. Luckily no-one answered or atempted to answer your question.

I have passed a note of this to Ami and James at the ICB.

Dear Daisy

Had you looked back at other posts you would have found that these type of questions have been removed in the past.  Another finding would have been that Stuart only ever tries to help in a positive way.  As a Fellow he doesnt have to waste his time with us mere mortals, but does and frequently too and thankfully to our benefit!!

Sarcasm and cheek does not bode well for your future as a successful bookkeeper in this case.

Common sense should have prevailed and you would have realised that you are giving out questions from the exams enabling everyone to have foreknowledge which does away with the whole point of a professional exam.

The ICB would have meant you to post something similar and not to mention the exam, having thought you had common sense.

Perhaps you should edit your post again and be a little less sarcastic.

Hi i posted that post after ringing the ICB and asking them if there was a problem as when it came to that exam as regards travelling expenses as there are several ways travelloing expenses can go and it depends on the information given by the client, there is no information wih this exam from the client about the travelling just pricings, as you know travelling to and from work is not an allowable expense unless its itinerant, the woman on the phone in the icb said she knew of no problem but to try the forum, so i did, i did not want answers as im sure if you check my results you will see i have passed them all to a high standard , i wondered if there was misssing information from my exam paper, a very nice lady replied and said the icb would not take kindly to this question so i tried to remove it myself by editing it ,unfortunatly it removed my post but the nice woman who replied, my message was on her reply, this was when that very rude gentleman became involved and told me that i was basically cheating and that he was reporting me, like some child telling tales at school, i replied yes a little sarcastically i admit but i was extremely offended because in no way did my question ask for the answer. then someone else became involved and told me i had no common sense and could not be a bookkeeper if i was sarcastic, i have to say that i am new to your forum and from what i have experienced some has not been pleasant, I was under the impression that this forum was there to be helpful, just like the first lady was , yet it seems some of your members are very petty and more interested in picking faults and looking for pointless arguments, i feel that i will not be using your forum in future, I apologise if i did do something wrong, in asking if there was information missing and i assure it wont happen again.

Dear All

Further to recent posts i would like to say a few words.

Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to appologise to Daisy as I agree in hindsite my post could have caused offence which was certainly not intended as it was worded a too bluntly.

Liz thank you very much for leaping to my defence it was very kind of you I aprreciated the sentiment but was a little upset by the wording re the mere mortals. As members of this institute I regard you all as my peers and colleagues and will wherever try to help and assist. Though I am a fellow of the Institute it does not mean I do not value the knowledge and opinions of all those who post here as there are still things I learn whilst reading the posts on this forum.

I would like to thank and give my 100% backing to Ami and her post we are all in this together and should stand united with one another whilst we may disagree from time to time we must at all times be courteous to one another and have the good graces to say oopsy i'm sorry if we cause offence.

Daisy I was not trying to come across in the way that I did I was merely trying to convey the serious nature of the road the post may have gone down. There have been others who have totally replicated the questions on the forum which causes no end of issues and headaches for the instute.

For my part again a appologise for any offence that may have been caused.

Warmest and Fraternal regards
Stuart
