What each level of the ICB entitles its members to do

Hi All

Having read through several posts it has become clear that some people are not entirely aware of what each level and membership status entitles them to do.

Ami from the ICB had put together a diagram that should clarify this.

Please see the link below

http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/Membership/Joining_by_Examination

I hope this is of help

Kind regards
Stuart

Thanks Stuart, that was a very helpful link as it shows exactly how we progress as we go through the levels and what we can do at each stage. Completely answers my questions that I had posted on a previous subject.
Thanks also to Ami.

Myself like Linda is employed by a Ltd Co and asked to perform month end recs for invoice discounting, VAT returns and some year end functions.

Does this mean that because of my level of membership and qualifications I shouldnt be performing these tasks?

I am sure there are others out there that do perform these tasks but dont have the qualifications to back them up.

Would have thought that it was quite straight forward..... being employed as an accounts assistant, etc you are under the umbrella of the FD a& Ltd and therefore under his Quals if he/she has them.  For example you should not therefore be taking out professional indemnity insurance in your own right etc as this is an employment contract not a self employed role.

What you shouldn't be doing is applying for a job as an FD etc using the ICB membership as your quals and saying that you can do everything.

You possibly can do everything but you mustn't bring the ICB into it at all.

(I think)

Thanks Liz

I find it difficult with being a ICB member & because the company i work for are trying to save money as the lady who used to do the job died. & they are paying an accountant to do all these jobs including payroll, to save them there fees,  they tend to dump everything on me with very little help or training.(Payroll i was given 2 weeks training). I take it their insurance is covering me.

Hello,
I still don't understand Amis' diagram. How are fellow members able to acheive level 4 status and  thus be licenced to deal with business tax, management accounting etc? As yet there is no such ICB examination.
Kind regards

My previous comment has obviously been taken out of context.  I'm an accounts supervisor and have been for the past 3 years. I dont have a FD to help and assist with getting to the next level of qualification and it is expected of me to do certain tasks that a Self Employed Bookkeeper would have to have the qualifications to do.  So my comment was should people like myself being carrying out these tasks although not qualified by taking examinations to do so.  The levels of membership do not have a middle area where members who do work for Ltd companies i.e do there Purchase & Sales Ledger and everything else up to the final accounts processing can get a qualification unless they do Level III.

Most FD jobs that are out there ask for far more experience and knowledge that some levels of membership and most accounts assistants dont perform VAT returns and year end processing.  So there is people out there who are doing things in the middle of both like myself....

I would love to be in the situation where I could go it alone but lots of companies out there look for people who have had a few years practice experience.

Linda & Louise

Once again this is personal opinion........

Working for a company, even a sole trader employed in the accounting role is completely different legally to working self employedand having other clients.

There are literally thousands working in accounts departments all over the country, I myself have been employed in various roles including administrator, office manager etc etc also covering bookkeeping, marketing, personnel (HR) and Payroll (ten years and no quals).

Just because I did not have quals did not mean I was capable and an qualified accountant or Chartered Accountant was always there at year end to pick up on the finer points.

It really all raises the question again of Quals vs Experience etc  - hand in hand is always good, but can also be impractical for the company and if the company is comfortable with it and you are managing then don't talk yourself out of a job?? (Maybe)

My understanding is that directly employed bookkeepers etc do not come under the Money Laundering Regs as in they do not need to register / be regulated.  BUt then again I could be completley wrong!

As Stuart said we would welcome the ICB take on this one.

This is a message for Stuart as I cannot get in touch with him any other way (sorry for breaking the message  thread).

I am looking at becoming a member and noticed from the website that there is a London meeting scheduled for 28th March-would it be possible to attend as a non-member?

Thanks
D
