I was speaking to a fellow accountant (CA) about this who runs her own tax business, and has been sounding SO hassled for the last couple of weeks. She was saying that HMRC allow you an extra day because of the way something is worded. However don't quote me as it was just a by-the-by conversation. I'm not qualified to do SA yet (maybe thankfully :).
Enjoy your sleep, you've earned it.

Hi Helen

Its the Steeden V Carver Precendent  I read about it last night funnily enough on accounting web.   There has been a lot of discussion about this and the law says   Less than one day late = no penalty.

Which contradicts other HM rules.  All I know I am not sure if I want to test out just incase my clients might kill me.

Interesting subject though.  Thanks for the help.  I was so tired at one point and drinking red bull because their system kept crashing.  I  might have even thought about it.  PS I only drink red bull on the 30th and 31st Jan.  I am sure that stuff would kill you if you drank it on regular basis.

Helen I hope you get your practice cert soon best of luck

Hi Sarah,
LOL, I don't like red bull either, at least it wasn't red wine you were drinking! :)
I am also a fellow scot and am just in the process of setting up my own wee business, and so excited about it. I live in Linlithgow, so only a few miles away (although enough that I don't feel I'm stealing your business :)
Had a meeting with my first potential (now hired) client this morning - all felt very new and didn't have a clue how much to charge - can't charge them all the set up costs!!
Have been searching extensively as to what software to set up with. Have used Sage for years, Sage Line 50, Sage Instant Payroll, Sage Instant Accounts being the main ones. But having looked on their website and spoken to CS, they seem to be so expensive. I know that you use Sage in your business and are obviously happy with it and invest heavily in it. Have you got any advice as to what software I should start with considering that I may only have a very small number of clients initially and can't afford the whopping fee for the full software from them? It's a big question, please only answer when you have time and are feeling rested. :)
Really appreciate it.

Hi Helen

I have had my own business since 2003 and have been using a software package called VT Transactions +. I use Sage as well but find VT a lot more flexible.
It's based on excel and is very user friendly. It does everything from VAT to management accounts.
The cost is  £125 + VAT for one licence annually. You can download a free 60day trial.
www.vtsoftware.co.uk
There is also VT Final Accounts which produces final accounts as well as statutory accounts. The information is pulled directly from Transactions +. I find this useful for all my clients as it is a nice way to present final accounts.

Good luck in your new venture.

Hi Helen

How are you,  its been a really busy week.   I understand the problem, just a few questions to try and help before I have a nice bottle of Irn Bru.  Do you have a budget in mind or the type of clients you want to get, because I think this makes a difference to your options .
