I see that Kaplan don't do these and have found some AAT books that cover the subject on line (I passed AAT some years ago) but just wondering if anyone knows of some reasonbly priced study packs for the ICB payroll??

Hi Macksie,
I purchased the Sage Instant Payroll Self Study course from Amazon for just over £30. You get a 180 day trial of the software with 6 study books which includes manual payroll as well. There is also the option to upgrade the software to full version if you want. I used this in conjuction with HMRC website and their pdf files. At present the software is for the 2010/2011 tax year, but this isn't a problem as ICB will ask you which tax year you want when ordering the exam.
I've just posted my payroll exam back today, so am keeping everything crossed!

Hi Vik,
When did you post yours?

Hi Both!
Best of luck, i have recently recived my result a PASS!! :) It took exactly one month to get the result from sending off the paper.
I also used the sage self study books and received a certificate from Sage, i had to register for the Sage exam online, so now i can boast about my ICB Payroll Dip and prove that i am Sage compliant.
Thanks Keith

Thanks for the info guys I will get on Amazon. I did the level II computerised as a sage self study and that worked out really well.
And best of luck to those awaiting their results

Hello everyone
Ive just read all your comments and was wondering do you do the exam with sage then to get certified or do you do the ICB exam? Also how do i find out about the payroll self study on Amazon?
Many Thanks
Zoe

Hello Zoe,
Not too sure what you mean? The sage exam only proves competency in using Sage Payroll, it does not test you knowledge of payroll in general. The main point in the Sage exam is to prove to clients/employers that you know how to use Sage.
You would still need to study Payroll with the ICB to be qualified.
Hope that helps?

Hi Keith/Zoe,
Keith, I think your mention of the Sage certificate confused Zoe. It did sound as if you did the Sage payroll using the Sage self study books and then received a certificate from Sage :-)
Zoe, when you are ready for the exam you phone the ICB and ask them to send it out to you. It won't be on the online shop as you have to tell them which tax year you need.

Sorry Pauline, only just came back and saw your msg. I posted mine 1st September, can't resist checking the results section everyday to see if they've done it yet.
Now onto the Self Assessment paper.

Hi everyone,
I used a distant learning supplier Ideal School, Glasgow for all my learning literature. You get step by step instructions with on going assignments. I am in the middle of doing payrol at the moment. Just out of interest how long do you get to do the payroll exam for the ICB.
Regards Anne
|
|
Hi Anne
The payroll exams are sent out on Fridays and you then have 14 days to complete them and send them back into the ICB for marking.
Hope this helps

HMRC do some fantastic courses ....and for free.
Give their self emplyed line a call to get the details.
I did payroll from scratch (and manually) at a CA's I worked for years ago, but went on the HMRC courses first. Gives a really good grounding.
Worthwhile doing it manually as well when learning. Then if your system goes bang at least you can swap to manual for a bit as then you understand how to use the ownderful tables
|
|
Does anyone know if the Sage Instant payroll course actually shows you the manual side too, because from the syllabus for payroll it says you need to be able to do both. If it isn't covered, does anyone know where I can get a textbook coviring the manual part. Don't need a full home study course as I've done these in the past and never used the tutor support, so don't feel it's worthwhile me paying for it.
Thanks Andrea

Hi Andrea
If you are going to be using the self study training packs for Sage Instant Payroll then they do cover manual payroll but not in great detail and maybe not as much as you need to know for the final exam. I am sure that you can get a book covering the manual side of payroll rather than having to pay out for a full course with tutor support.
Someone on this forum might be able to help you with that.
Kind regards Lesley Smith

Hi Andrea,
Yes the Sage self study books do cover the manual side, but as Lesley said not in great detail. I didn't get any extra books but downloaded the help books from HMRC website. They cover everything you need to know really. (And they are free!)
The ones I downloaded were:-
NI tables - CA38 & CA41 PAYE & NI rates and limits - E12 Taxable pay tables A Taxable pay tables Calculator method Taxable pay tables Manual method Statutory Sick Pay - E14 Statutory Maternity Pay - E15 Statutory Adoption Pay - E16 Statutory Paternity Pay - E19 Collection of Student Loans - E17 Student Loan deduction tables SL3 NI for Directors - CA44 Day to day payroll - E13 Further Guide to PAYE and NICs - CWG2 Class 1A NI contributions on benefits in kind - CWG5
and a few other forms that I wanted to look at as I went along. You may feel you don't need all of those, but I always work on overkill :-) You should also make sure you download the correct forms for the tax year that you are intending to take the exam. I did 2010 - 2011.
Hope this helps.

Wow, Pauline. Thanks very much for this info, I'm sure this will be a great resource. I appreciate your time putting all of this detail in for me. Hopefully others will find it useful too.

It was so much easier when you could fill in an online order form with quantities and they'd post all of these out to you. I hate these downloaded books. Ye cannae beat paper.

Well, I've done it. Ordered Sage Payroll Course from Amazon, and I bought the Self Assessment book earlier. Looks like I'm gonna be busy for the next few weeks/months.

I assume the Sage Instant Payroll course is in the same format as the Sage 50 Payroll Workbooks course. If so I like the way they do it. You can restore at any stage. But the bit I like the best is for each section in the book it tells you appproximately how long it should take. I usually allow a fair bit longer - but it does mean if I'm at a loose end around 11pm I'll look and see how long the latest section in the book is going to take. If it is around 30 minutes I'll go ahead and start studying the section. If it is 70 minutes I'll give it a miss.

That does sound quite a useful tool. I'm quite looking forward to getting on with it now.

11:35pm - Statutory maternity pay (60 minutes) At least I'll get a good night's sleep if I do that first.
For Sage 50 Payroll - there are two levels and three books in each level. I'm currently on Level 2 Workbook 2. When this level is finished I'm going to re-read Level 1 Workbooks 1-3 again before sitting the exam. Then it's all three workbooks for level 2 to be read again before doing that exam.
And then re-read the four workbooks of Sage 50 Accounts level 3.
I've probably read more in the last 18 months than I did in the previous 44 years of my life.

I'm actually better at night. If I start studying at about 6pm, I can quite happily work through til about 3am. Don't get me wrong, I do love my sleep.... I just struggle to get out of my pit in the morning.
I struugle with mornings. I'm barely concious now and I've been up for half an hour. Apologies for any smelling pistakes, but I'm still half asleep.

Hi Andrea,
3am?! Do you really study for 9hrs ? If you do, that's dedication! No wonder you can't get out of bed in the morning :-)

Yes, I get really into it, but then, once I put it down I probably wont pick it up again for 2 weeks. I'm great at procrastinating.
