Just a few questions-
1. Can I do payroll having completed my level 2?
2. Are there any study books for the payroll exam ?
3. Do I have to have my own software - year 2011/ 12 ?

Thanks

As no one has responded.
Yes you can do payroll, I did it before I even took the level II manual!
I know that some members have brought the sage instant payroll study books, I know you get a copy of sage but not sure if it is a trial and they also used the HMRC website. I think they have brought it from Amazon, try looking at past posts. When I did my exam I had to call the ICB to request it as they asked me which year I wanted.

If you can do payroll without the qualification- why am I bothering to take the exam?  I see you have PM Dip after your name so you must have qualified.

I thought it would be a requirement with the ICB that you are qualified before undertaking this kind of work, where does this stand with the practice license and indemnity insurance?

Does anyone from ICB have any comments?

Yes Lisa you do need to have passed the exam etc.

I think this answer was more about whether payroll exam be taken after passing the level 2 bookkeepping exams, which it can due to it being a stand alone qualification.

However if the question is asking whether you can do payroll without doing an exam then I believe, under ICB regulations, the answer is no.

Hi Lisa

Part of the T&Cs of the Practice Licence is that you only undertake work which you are qualified to do.
Also, if there was a mistake made and you weren't qualified, I vey much doubt your PII insurer would be happy to support you if a claim was made against your insurance.

I've just bought the Sage Instant Payroll Course and the software is trial software only for 180 days.  So about 6 months to make sure the course and exams are done, should be plenty of time.  For £43.00 I wasn't expecting full software anyway.

I don't think the full software would be much use for a bookkeeping business anyway as it is only intended for one company. £43 - is that 5 books you get for that and the software for 180 days? I think that's not bad.

I didn't think it was bad either.  I've been given some advice on which HMRC guides to use to help with the underpinning knowledge and the manual side of things - so might get payroll under my belt quite cheaply.  I've ordered SA exam, which should be sent out tomorrow.  Once that is done then I'll have a look at starting the payroll.  I've told 3 accountants that I'm studying towards both, so I'd better get on with it really.
