Self Assessment Study Material

Hi,

I would like to make a start on SA but was just wondering if there are any text books or other material that could be used to prepare for the exam.  I have passed all my exams so far (upto level 2) by simply using library books as I am not in the position where I am earning that I can justify spending money on training courses etc.  I know that there is an ICB manual but again £60 (student membership) is a bit steep for me at this moment in time.  Many thanks for your help.

Hi

Just to say that the book available in the shop on this wonderful site was all I used to pass the self-assessment exam.

It explains everything you need to know, with worked examples and small tests throughout to check your understanding.

It may seem a little expensive but I found it worth every penny.

HI Shazan

I find the HMRC website absolutely invaluable.

Good Luck

Thanks.  Just wondering LizD in your opinion is the website alone, enough to pass the exam with?

My opinion is the ICB book (for me) alone wasn't enough but downloading a few of the duciments from HMRC helped. You could download every single document and read every single page of those documents and that would also be enough. But how long would that take.

If your intention at some point in the future is to set up as a self-employed bookkeeper and to offer completion of Self Assessment Tax Returns - then my advice is bite the bullet and buy the ICB book. Look on it as an investement in your future career. One tax return that you wouldn't otherwise have done will pay for the book.

EDIT : Changed "opinion" to "advice".

Hello all, i am also considering doing the self assesment tax return as ive just got my practice licence through and half done my website.
Can anyone give further information on it as i can only find info on what it involves, is it just study then take the exam or is it like the other levels like with the Home learning college?
Any advise or guidance would be greatfully received

Hi have read your advice in regards to SA.  Would u please give me an indication about what kind of information  you downloaded frm HMRC. My big issue is filling the forms.  Rules are spot on but when it is question of forms get a bit confused.  Did u get any support from the institute.
