Hi,

I've just received my practice licence this week, and apart from some bookkeeping I did for a friend, I've not really done anything on a professional basis before.  What I was wondering is what is the best medium to keep the "books" in?

I use excel quite a lot but am not sure if this would be recommended for bookkeeping.  Does anyone use a bookkeeping software package, and if so which one?  The other thing I was looking at doing is keeping old fashioned hand written ledgers, but that might turn out to be too slow.

Please, anybody, I would love to hear how you carry out your bookkeeping tasks.

Hi Vince,

The medium for bookkeeping is often down to the opinion of the client - so hold on to your cash until you know which one you will need!

The bookkeeping I do on site for clients is all on Sage (on their computers, and so the software provided by them).  The clients I bookkeep for at home are all happy with Excel.

When I started out I went out and bought various accounting/bookkeeping software packages - and all sit on my computer unused.  As you already have Excel I'd suggest that you wait until a client requests a specific software package before you invest in one.  Some clients will be adamant that you use a specific package, some will be happy with what you advice - but you won't know until you get the clients.

Thanks Lucy.  I must admit that comes as a relief, because I didn't want to fork out for expensive software.  So basically, you are saying you don't need to post double entry, and it's ok to analyse expenditure out in a spreadsheet.

Thanks again,
Vince
