Kaplan Advanced Bookkeeping Revision Kit!

Oh my Jeez,

Has anyone else found that when they're studying their revision text (Kaplan Advanced Bookkeeping book in my case) They're perfectly confident, go through the activities- No problem... Get to the revision kit and complettely melt!?

So far i've gotten to question 12, and I think that i've gotten only 1 or 2 questions right first time round!!!

It's good in the sence that I can see the answers, and figure out how they're arrived at those figures and I feel that I am learning ways of calculating things that the study text didn't cover but my god it makes my confidence go from high to low in the space of 1 question! It'd be handy if there was step by step guides on how they've come to the answers but never mind!!

How did other people respond to the revision kit!? xx

Hi Kara, you are not alone.

I'm trying to fit my studies around a part-time job, a handful of clients, 2 teenage children, school PTA, village hall committee, etc etc. so my study time is very limited. Everytime I think I have grasped the concepts I complete a question from the revision kit and feel hopelessly demoralised when I can't get it right.

And then looking at questions on topics I learnt a few weeks ago... forget it!  I know I don't have to complete this with in a certain deadline but I just don't seem to be able to commit all these new concepts to memory!

Not sure when I'll ever be ready enough to take the exam.  I like the revision kit though - it's very useful.

Hope this makes you feel a bit happier!

The standard of question is, in my opinion, far higher than anything you will encounter in the exam. So if you can eventually get through it then the exam will be a doddle. Also, I think question 15 has some information missing so it is impossible to get to the answer. It has been mentioned on here a few times and I don't think anyone has ever had a reply on how to do it.

I've booked my exam for Friday 13th April (Great date!) It's only 17 days away and i'm panicking i've not left myself enough time!

I only every get to study when my 2 year old is at nursery, and atm he has a suspected case of mumps so he can't even go to nursery! Argh

I feel a bit silly though, i've been rattling on about how it'd help if they showed their workings out in the answers... not looking past the balance sheets and realising that actually, they do show their workings! D'oh! The amount of time i've sat there number crunching trying to figure it all out! Argh!

Debsie, do you see yourself booking the exam any time soon? How long have you been studying level 3 so far?

Peasie, I read you comment on that a while ago, I haven't tried Q15 yet but i'll bare that in mind and let you know if I come to any differnt conclusion!

What are your methods with the revision kit? Do you make notes as you go down the adjustments and add to the P&L And B/S as you find a final figure? Atm that's what i'm doing but i'm wondering if it'd be better to work out my calculations and do an extended trial balance... should I be doing that anyway?!!!!

If you think you won't be ready by 17th April you can always reschedule it online for free, think you have to give a weeks notice. I know this from experience!!

Hi Kara

Have you tried the online mock exam yet?  I am going to attempt the mock exam today and then hopefully book the exam, if the mock goes well.

All the best with your studies

A sensible approach. I really don't understand people that book exams before they have done the mock exam. They may have their reasons - I just don't understand them.

Hi Kara

I rescheduled my exam to a later time and benefited from extra time preparing.  It is alot to remember for this exam and worth taking your time. The online mock was a good way to know what to expect and weaknesses to brush up on.  The revision kit gave great preparation.

Good luck, be encouraged, most of us think we will never pass but get a great result.

Everyone has different reasons. Mine is a combination of having a goal to work towards and only being able to do the exam on a friday (Only day my mum can look after my son). Whenever I've tried booking the exams, the friday dates always have 3-4 week waiting lists. So if I were to do a mock before the exam, i'd be waiting at least 3 weeks before being able to take the exam, and in that time i'll get too confident, stop studying, then by the time the exam comes, forgot everything!  Plus when I have a goal in mind I make sure to work hard and put in the study hours, if I wasn't to have a goal in mind i'd get lazy (Not the way everyone is, but for me!)
