I am currently residing in Spain and studying for ICB qualifications, does anyone know whether there are any member's meetings or the like held in Gibraltar?

Thanks

Hi Neecie,

I live in Fuengirola (Malaga) and am also very interested in knowing about other members in the area and any possible meetings. Do you live in Gibraltar or Spain? I recently passed my Level 2 computerised and am studying towards Level 3 manual. Now I have Level 2 I am going to upgrade my membership to AICB and get a practice license and see about the possibilities of getting some clients here, but I'm a bit uncertain about where to start. What level have you reached? Do you know any other ICB members in this area? ICB do not organise meetings in this area, but I spoke to them about it and they said they would contact all members in this area and let them know I am interested in making contact with them. If there are enough it would be good to organise something and help each other out.

I hope to hear back from you, David

Hello David,

I live in Spain about 25 mins from Gibraltar, I am just about to take Level 1 exam, just waiting for the link from ICB.  So I have a bit of a way to go yet.  Initially I will be looking to work for someone else probably in Gibraltar and then continue my studying through the levels in order to apply for the practice licence like you are doing.

If you hear from any other ICB Member's about meeting up from this region, I would be interested.

Good luck with your study's and future Practice !

Hi David,

Just read your post and hope the bookkeeping is going well in Spain.  How easy is it to set up over there. Im based in the west midlands and just starting up, but my hubbys dream is eventually to move to Spain and wondered what was involved setting up over there.

Very best wishes

Hi Lainy

Compared to the UK it is much more complicated to set up business here and much more expensive, without getting into the financial climate of the country creating a lack of customers....
To be self employed you have to pay from day one about 250€ a month to the government whether you earn anything or not! This means at the begining whilst trying to find your first clients and get set up you are having to pay this amount. There is a fair amount of paperwork involved in setting up a business here but once done it's done!
In Spain the general idea is either you have an accountant or you don't, bookkeepers as such don't exist. Also if you are thinking about moving and working here you have to take into account the different taxes and way of preparing and presenting these taxes, and also payroll, if applicable to you, which is completely different here.

However, I live on the Costa del Sol where many British expats are living. Many of these have small businesses: bars, restaurants, builders, plumbers etc. A lot of these are paying Spanish accountants to carry out their bookkeeping work and are willing to change and hire a British qualified bookkeper, who not only speak the same language as them but gives them the services they may be used to in the UK. The current economic situation here is not helping at all and an awful lot of small businesses have closed. Over the coming years things can only improve.

Although I may sound a bit negative I just want you to know that working here is hard work, but having said that it is well worth it. Whilst there is work here I am not going anywhere else, it is a fantastic place to live and although I earn less and work more I wouldn't change it for anything.

Please let me know of your plans. I have been trying to find other ICB members in the area but am not having much luck. I belive if there is a small goup of us here we could really help each other out.

Good luck and best wishes

David

Hi David

Thanks for your reply.  Im glad that you are enjoying living in Spain, and thanks for the info. If we did move 2 Spain, its nice knowing that their are other members.  Are the exams slightly different or the same, apart from tax and payroll?  Can you speak Spanish?  Im wondering how much spanish i would need to learn in order to do the bookkeeping. i know Sage one has a spanish version. Anyway at the moment im setting up here, but i must admit, do luv the Spanish weather, etc. I went on my honeymoon to the Costa de sol.

Thanks ever so much. speak soon

Very best wishes
