I imagine you would need to join aat and have a practice licence through them or join here taking the exams and/or applying for exemption then getting a practice licence here.....

While there are a lot of similarities between aat and here there are some differences too....

I gained my aat bookkeeping and intermediate certificate.  Then I applied to join the ICB, to which an entry paper was required to be passed at 100%

I dont imagine the bookkeeping certificate alone would be enough to set up as self employed.  But the real requirement is to be registered and regulated by a governing body.  For example ICB, AAT, HMRC

My understanding of the AAT is they wont allow you to practice until you have the advanced certificate i.e level 8.

The AAT bookkeeping qualification is only an introduction and, quite rightly, you cant set up in practice with this.  To set up in pratice with the AAT you need to complete the whole qualification.

The ICB would be a better option for getting set up in practice sooner as bookkeeper.  The AAT would cover a lot of subjects that you dont need as a bookkeeper.
