Starting ICB course, question about Sage/Kaplan

Hi everyone

I've decided to sign up to do an ICB Bookeeping course with Kaplan and as part of the package I get free Sage Accounts software. I've never used Sage software before, is it easy to pick up? Or do I need prior knowledge before embarking on a bookkeeping course? I'm usually pretty good when it comes to learning how to use new software.

In my current job I use VT Transactions (not a fan, but did learn it quickly) so think I would prefer to use Sage for the course if better than VT.

Also I'm going to be doing the course with Kaplan - anyone else done the course with them, any experiences you want to share? Do you have to submit coursework, etc. How long does the course take (Level 1 and 2 - manual/computerised).

Thanks

Hales

Hi Hales,

If you're fairly quick at sussing out new software and by the sounds of it, have some accounts knowledge from your current job (so you may have a clue as to what some logical processes might be), then sage should be a doddle!  I found it very easy to pick up, most things with it are fairly intuitive.

How long it takes is obviously dependent on how much time you can put it, any current knowledge etc, so this is extremely variable, I'd say anything from a couple of months to near on a year is within range.  I'm assuming you're doing it distance learning so it's at your own pace, if it's class based then I have no idea.

I had some experience with kaplan about 4 years ago when I studied the first two levels of AAT with them.  Everything was great but to be honest, I had very little contact with them, I pretty much got the books, studied and sat the exams so that's not a lot to go on.  I didn't have to submit coursework but did have some progress tests that I could complete and send in for marking if I wanted.  This is quite a while ago though so hopefully somebody with some more recent experience will chime in.

hope that's some help anyway, good luck with it all and welcome to the forum!

Hi Hales,
I have only just signed up for the ICB career path so I can not comment on course work, I can however give you my experiences with Sage line 50 and VT Transaction. I used to own a printing business (USA Franchise) and wanted some UK software to do my financials. After speaking to my accountants they suggested VTT+ and to be honest I am so very glad they did. I found it to be one of the easiest things to learn (I already had a little double entry experience) compared with my experiences later on with Sage. But it is a case of horses for courses so rather than me repeat what is already out there, try googling VTT+ versus Sage for some very good comparrisons. Sometimes, the flock do not always choose the best field.
