Hi all

I have just passed my payroll diploma so am now going to try the self assessement.!!

Can anyone advise  me how you study for this. There is a book in the shop on here but is that sufficient to cover everything?

I will be doiing this self study as i have been doing all the others this way since last July and it works for me but i need to know where to get manuals which cover the syllabus.

Also if anyone has any past papers i woudl be really grateful so that i can get  a feel for what it will be like

email: carolyoung69@hotmail.co.uk

Thank you very much

I agree with Lucy, in fact I did mine solely with the use of the HMRC website, odd bit of googling and a past paper.

I've sent you the past paper that I used.  Good Luck!!

No worries Carol.  I got the syllabus from the ICB website, the current syllabus can be found at:

http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/Study--Qualifications/Current-Syllabuses/Level-III-Self-Assessment-Tax

I don't think there's anything that can't be found on the internet these days, and anything to do with self assessment (as well as vat, payroll etc) can always be found on the HMRC website.  After all, there are many people that complete their own self assessments without the help of an accountant or bookkeeper, and HMRC could hardly start dishing out penalties for inaccuracies if they haven't made the information available to all, and professionals in the industry always need a reference, especially as it's constantly changing.

I'll send the past paper again, if you still don't get it, check your spam folder just in case.

Thank you very much Chris.

I dont know if I am being blind or stupid, or both.

I cannot see where it tells you which year the SA exam is based on.

Can anyone confirm whether it is 2013/14 or 2014/15.

Many thanks

No Worries Clare.  It's actually 2011-12 but It doesn't state this until it asks you to complete the tax return for year ending 5th April 2012 in the qustions section which is a fair way in to the paper.

To reply to the original question, I actually studied this with Ideal Schools as Self Assessment was entirely new to me. I got the ICB Manual as well. I'm glad I did that as they don't cover exactly the same ground and explain some things in a different way.

I do have a past paper but mine is Adam Walker and it's 11/12 so I would strongly suggest buying the most recent one from the ICB as quite a bit has changed since then! It's only £10. A small investment to make sure you're well prepared for exams!

Hello,

I was looking through the forum looking for anybody who may have any Self Assessment Tax Return Mock Papers and I have discovere your quatation. I was wondering if you can be kind enough to sned over a copy of your mock paper please? This would be an extremely helpful.

Much appreciated for your cooperation.

Hi All,

I notice that the paper being shared here relates to the 2011/12 financial year. Since then there have been some changes, mainly with the format of the exam, which is now online. With that in mind, and the fact that the 2011/12 exam was withdrawn quite some time ago, it'd be best if you completed the online mock paper (already mentioned by LizF) that is available from ICB, if it's not already being provided if you are attached to a training provider.

Sorry for butting in and hope it guides you in the right direction.

Hi Everyone

I am currently studying the Self Assessment Tax Return course.  When I pass the exam I am thinking of offering this service to clients.  How is eveyone finding Self Assessment Tax Return work, how are you all finding dealing with HMRC? Is there much call for this service or is it mainly accountants who carry out this work, and how do you price this work?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Chris

Hi Chris,

I think you will find this is a very important part of your work.

All my sole trader clients are glad that I can offer this service along with preparing their accounts and payroll.

It actually saves them money because if they had to go to an accountant for this they would probably charge for checking my accounts preparation on top of the SATR.

My fees for this are over and above the accounts prep and depends on whether there are other sections to be completed on the return. For a straight forward one purely for sole trader income is a minimum of £120 - this is for meeting to sign the return, submission to HMRC and then sending final copy to client for their records.

Hi Marilyn

Thank you very much for your reply and your thoughts.  I will press on with my studies and hopefullky pass the exam and offer this to my clients.  I have had to turn down Self Assessment work in the last year and pass these clients onto another bookkeeper, so this is something that I need get qualified in.

Thank you again Marilyn, your help is very much appreciated.

Hi Chris

I thought this was an old thread but I see that you have accessed it recently.

I have recently set up my practice and want to offer self assesment so I am looking to train. Do you have to do a course or do you just buy the book from the ICB. Is there a cheaper oprion as the book is £75 or would it be best to have it to ensure passing?

Hi Gail,

There are no rules on how you study for it as long as you pass the exam.  I've self studied for all my exams and I didn't buy any study materials at all for this one, all the information you need is available online (HMRC website, google etc).  It's a good idea to do a mock exam first though to give you an idea of what might be involved.  Good luck with it!!

I've sent mine across Gail.  It is a 2011-12 paper though, I don't know whether the mocks you can buy online have been updated, might be worth asking the ICB and getting one of those if they have. Still, the paper gives you a good idea of what will be required, it was already a year out of date when I bought it and sat the exam!

Hi Gail,

I thought that the book from ICB was a little expensive so I searched online and found 2 books which I found very helpfull when I did my SA exam. Both were by Aubrey Penning, One is a tutorial and the other is a work book where you can practice some assessments. I can't remember the exact cost but think that together they probably cost about £25.

they are specifically written to cover Personal Tax for AAT level 4 so cover everything you'll need.

You can buy them from amazon etc and are called Personal tax (Finance Act 2015) Tutorial and Personal tax (Finanace act 2015) workbook.

hope that helps and good luck.
