SAGE Self Study Payroll

Hi Everyone,

I see on here that some of you have done a self study course with sage concerning payroll. I want to learn payroll but I wanted to know:

1 Do they give you any background on manual payroll so one can see how to work it out.

2. Is it possible to pass the ICB payroll exam on just that or would I need anything else? I have one advantage in that I am an ex Revenue and Customs employee so I already know about codings and how this affects peoples' pay, and I know about class 2 and 4 NI from the Self Assessment exam.

I would like to do a course [there are enough providers!] but I can't afford it at the moment although I'm not having a go at the providers - their prices are very reasonable considering what they are offering.

If someone who's done the SAGE self study payroll could advise me I'd be very grateful. Thanks very much

Hi Caz

i recently passed the payroll exam and used the sage instant self study pack where you get 180'days of the sage instant payroll software included.  I bought it via amazon and you can also get it on ebay for about £40-£50.  I had no previous experience of payroll before. In the pack you get 5 little books and you work yr way through them.  One of them covers the manual side of payroll and i found this quite daunting at first. It does explain it quite well though but i also downloaded lots of the information from the HMRC website. Its worth doing this. They do info sheests on the NI and PAYE tables, student loans, statutatory payments etc.  There are lots but you need to see them to be up to dAte.. Doing past papers is also invaluable as it gives you an idea of what you will be asked for in the exam. Once i had gone through the course i then did 3 past papers and felt ready for the exam. I passed first time so it can be done!   I have done all my exams by self study somit proves it can be done. Im currently wading through self assessment! Slow going though!!!  Good luck !

Hi

I'm also looking at doing self study for Payroll.  Have done previous exams via training provider but just can't afford it this time.

I know this has been covered but am worried about the manual side.  The descriptions for the Sage Instant self study doesn't seem to mention anything about manual and I wondered how much it covered and how much you had to look on HMRC.  Was it just up to date tables, limits, etc that you had to look up or was it more in depth?  Also does Sage cover things such as CIS and auto-enrolment?  The providers all seem to use 50 rather than Instant and I wondered if that was because it covers these extra things.

Many thanks for any tips.

 Hi Carol,

Is the Sage payroll course you did enough to allow you to provide payroll services? I am looking into it and have taken a course which was through groupon and cost just £19!! This is provided through learning hub but I don't think it covers an exam and would probably need to take that seperately. The thing is I have completed all my exams through self study as it suits.

Hi Carol,

First of all, I'm really sorry I didn't reply when you replied the first time. I forgot all about it.

Thanks very much I'll send off for the SAGE instant self study payroll.  Good luck with your Self Assessment studies. If it's any help, in addition to the ICB textbook, I got the tax return up and downloaded the helpsheets for the tax return itself, and the employment, self employment, income from property and capital gains. You may have already done this yourself but I thought I'd mention it in case it helps.

Once again, thanks very much for your very helpful advice and good luck with your Self Assessment.
