Sick note advise

Hi All,

Just wanted to ask a quick question.

Could anyone clarify the rules for periods for sick notes.

i.e.   I have a chap on sick leave for the last two weeks, week one was covered by a medical cert from the monday (21st) to monday (28th) (doctor put the actual dates). Then the medical cert was dated the monday (28th) (technically when he was still covered from prev) and the doc just put one week (no dates to and from).  The guy hasnt turned in today.

Should it be one week extension of the previous medical cert (so he is covered for today but not tomorrow), or is it one week from the date the sick note was created (meaning not covered for todays sickness)?

Any help would be great.

Thank you

Lisa

Hi Lisa

I used to work for DWP.  Take the actual date that the doctor signed (28th) and count one week diagonally (3rd).  This means the certificate expired on Sunday 3rd August and is the last day that the doctor has covered.  A new certificate is needed from and including Monday 4th August.  Of course he can see the doctor later and have it backdated to include today.

Best wishes

Helen

That was my instinct (perhaps underlying knowledge somewhere in there) but thought I best check.

Much appreciated.

You're very welcome.  See, you knew it all along.  It's so easy to doubt ourselves in this line of work.  Thank goodness we can all turn to the forum for those shaky moments.
