New student member saying hi!

Hello

New student member of the ICB here and thought I'd say hello and introduce myself.  I am new to bookkeeping after being a local government employee for many years and, latterly, a house-husband.  My aim is to become qualified with the ICB and enter the world of self-employment.  The thought of working for myself is a little daunting but exciting at the same time.

I'm training with Ideal Schools and the tutors and staff have been extremely helpful and supportive.  The subject matter is entirely new to me but I am enjoying it immensely (currently studying level2), both the challenges of formal learning again and of getting to grips with a new subject.

No doubt I will have plenty of questions and pleas for assistance as I progress through the course.

Yours

Bill

Good Morning Bill

Welcome, like yourself, I returned to study at the age of 52 and hadn't done a real exam for 28 years !!! I am studying with Training Link and enjoying it immensley. I used to run a Guest House with my wife and we subsequently sold it. Hence, I am looking for a new career.

I have been self employed for 10 years and yes it is very good and very bad.

Regards

Trevor

Many thanks for the kind welcomes Trevor and Lainy.

I would be particularly interested to hear about experiences of taking up bookeeping later in life and in becoming self-employed, what are the pitfalls, things to watch out for, recommendations etc. as it's all quite new to me.

Yours

Hi Bill, Welcome to the site

you'll find lots of help and advice from like minded people on here, and like you I came to bookkeeping late in life (when I should have been retired really) but I did the courses, passed the exams and set up on my own and I really really love it.

some people seem to panic when they first start up if they haven't got loads of clients, but take your time, select your clients carefully as you don't want to work for those that don't pay and concentrate on doing a good job, there is no substitute for recommendation and if you look after your clients they will recommend you. so good luck and best wishes for your future

Hi Bill

Welcome to the site!

I too am studying with Ideal schools, like you say they are very helpful.

I've been doing book-keeping work for many years but have no formal qualification so thought I'd better do something about it as my dream is also to be self-employed.

Good luck with your studies
