Hi Gavin,
Welcome! I too joined the ICB after studying AAT ( only to level 2 though) for exactly the same reasons as yourself.
ICB is ideal for studying at your own pace and is much cheaper in exam fees etc than AAT. I also find that this qualification is more for those of us who want to run their own business rather than working for someone else.
I would ask around your local area for work experience - there will be accountants more than willing to help you, especially if you're going to offer your services for free! However if you are qualified to AAT level 3 I would try and get a bit of money out of them first. You could also search for other ICB members in you're area on this website to see if they have anything they can offer you.
The ICB members are a pretty friendly bunch, so I'm sure someone will be able to help.
I'm just in the process of setting up business myself, just waiting for my practice license, but like you feel I need a bit of experience. My plan is to see if I can work freelance for a local accountant and/or start with a few clients until I find my feet.
Keep in touch and good luck.
My email address if you want to bounce ideas off each other is janette.rix@me.com
