hi

my partner has started working for a haulage company. He has been told he has to sleep in the lorry 4 nights a week but told that he will get taxed for this. Is this correct as I thought the overnight allowance is tax free?

Hi Lesley Anne,

I am at present requalifying as a bookkeeper, I have over twenty experience as a HGV 1 driver. I can only say that in all my years lorry driving I have never been taxed on night out allowances. These are generally considered to be a business expense as they are basically a subsistance allowance and most drivers are normally expected to pay for secure overnight parking for the vehicle such as at motorway sevices, even if this includes an allowance towards an evening meal. It is ludicrous to expect a driver to pay for these parking exxpenses etc out of an overnight allowance and then expect him to pay tax on the re-imbursement of these fees. There are many reputable haulage firms out there, at the moment many are loking for experienced and competent drivers, may be the only choice is to find one. Businesses expenses re-imbursed to a member of staff are not to the best of my knowledge taxable!
