Yell

Has anyone else failed their self assessement but isn't sure why.

Have you disagreed with any of the answers?

I'm really annoyed that some questions are really ambiguos when they really don't need to be.

and it seems I have failed on those ones!!

Hi Shar,

I am just about to submit my Self Assessment exam and I totally understand where you are coming from!

Some of the questions on my paper are very dubious, almost like there are words missing to make it confusing.

Am not too hopeful at passing this.

I believe you will have to do a full re-sit, on the old exam I think it was a case of redoing the bits that were wrong but with the new on-line one it is just pass or fail.

Good luck

Rich

I have just passed the new self-assessment exam. I'm very happy about it :), but I feel the same as you.

I'm disagree with some of the answers. And I don't understand why some answers are the right answers.

Hello Orsi,

Congratulations on Passing :-)

Thank you for your reply. Can I message you to see if you took the same paper as me?

It would be interesting to see if you agree on the areas I think are incorrect.

My email address is smf25@hotmail.com

Best regards

Shar

Hi,

Wow I actually managed to pass my Self Assessment exam this morning, despite constantly querying myself and changing answers.

Still not sure on some of the things I got wrong though!

Good luck to everyone who attempts this. Read the questions very carefully.

It's not just this paper it's all of them.

im sure they do it on purpose just to lower the pass rate.

they need to sort it out I have just submitted my B3 paper and waiting for the results but I am ready to challenge it already as the questions are stupid and again seems to have bits missing.

Hi

I am posting as moderator and I just want to raise a few points.

Firstly I will highlight to the ICB the worries and concerns you have.    However I do have to highlight that Students are not allowed compare their answers.

If both Students had passed the paper that could be different and I am not a 100% on that particular rule.  But Students who have passed are not allowed pass on the answers to current students who are in the process of trying to pass the paper.

Please understand I am not trying to have  a go or suggest any wrong doing.  But all our students must be protected and the same level playing field.

Hi Sarah,

At the end of the exam the right answers were displayed by the system. So I know where I went wrong and I know the correct answer as well. So it is not about to compare our answers, it is just to see if someone else is agree or disagree with the fact that some of the answers are not correct (which was displayed by the system).

I wanted, but I will not discuss the answers with anyone, because there is no point to do that and I don't want to be in trouble.

I feel sorry for the student who will take the exam. And I would be very angry if I fail it because of these answers.

Fortunately I have passed, so I'm happy, but I feel the exam is not fair.

Thanks Guys for all the support.

I just thought I must be going mad. I waisted so much time trying to figure out what some of the questions were trying to get at. I am also sure some of the answers do not fit the question.

I think it's also unfair that becasue 1 question gives a dubious incorrect answer, you then get the rest of the secion marked down as it then follows on incorrectly,if you get what I mean. If 1 out of 6 answers are incorrect why mark down the following 3, for example.

My problem is,  there's no need to be ambiguous, it's not like you will receive ambiguous papers from your clients, they are what they are.

I'm really dissapointed that I failed the exam, I work on self assesments for a qualified accountant, he signs them off. I wonder what answers he will come up with. I might ask him tomorrow.

Hi Shar,

I understand where you you are coming from. Hopefully with Sarah getting involved and passing on our comments it might improve by the time you take the exam again.

I'm sure you will get through it next time. Good luck anyway.

It's not about sharing answers, it's about how the exam is not fair or transparent, but instead it's deleribitly misleading.

i was able to see my online results and the questions I got wrong for a short amount of time, now I can't even see the paper just the result. Whilst the ICB want to keep the answers secure how are we meant to learn from our mistakes if we don't know where we went wrong?

Could I ask anyone who has a query on any paper to email exams@bookkeepers.org .uk and we will contact you individually. We may have to make a charge if you wish for a full written report on your paper but I will certainly look at each individual case. We are gradually building feedback reports into all of our examinations.

Further to my earlier comments it has never been ICB's intention to mislead or to ask ambiguous questions in any examination. Our papers are written and tested by experienced examiners and have been checked by taxation specialists. Also, prior to releasing the current (2013/14) SAT papers  these were tested thoroughly by several of our Members and Fellows, feedback was taken on board and a number of adjustments made to the papers. If the people on the earlier posts would like to email me with the actual areas they felt were a problem I will look into their papers for them.

I will always answer any questions where candidates think they have been unfairly treated in any examination. All we ask is that you contact us and we will look at every queried paper. Again, the email to use is exams@bookkeepers.org.uk

Once I have had my paper marked and got my result back I will share my concerns with the paper with you, as I want to see the ICBs interpretation on the items included in the paper compare to mine.

Hello Laughing

I know this is an old topic but i just wanted to say it has made me feel much better, i failed my self assessment exam & felt silly telling my family the questions didn't really make sense it was like i couldn't tell them what they wanted because i couldn't understand what they was asking for!

i got 86% & have found out that previously under old rules i would have had my paper returned with a clearer indication of what was needed to correct it & for £25 could re-submit.

I really hope for the future the ICB stop asking sneaky/tricky unclear questions & realize there is no need for it, other then to generate  more examination fee's.

6 month wait for me to try again because as i got told the ICB is really focused on the USA right now, if we had another paper you could do it, but we don't & i'm not allowed to tell you when the new syllabus will be available & i can't tell you why i can't tell you. . . . . ok?

erm no not really!

Hello Pigeon,

While I understand your dismay at failing the SA exam you have to realise at the end of the day if you don't understand the exam questions then how are you going to assist clients?

Clients come to us as we are perceived as being knowledgeable and professional and believe me they will ask you some pretty stupid questions sometimes and will want answers!

You are lucky - when this exam first came out and I took it - it was 100% or fail - no options! I passed but then I had prior knowledge which maybe you do not.

SA Tax is becoming even more complex every day so it is vital you have a proper understanding of it - just think what is going to happen when HMRC bring in their Making Tax Digital changes in 2018 - even I shudder to think how that is going to pan out.

Remember at the end of the day when you complete a client's tax return you are dealing with their livelihood and their personal tax affairs and nobody likes paying more tax than they should so you have to endeavour to get it right.

 marilyn

thank you for your supportive kind words & understanding, I totally did not realise that i would be assisting clients that gave purposefully missleading information!

I have been self employed for 10years so i did know that tax is important to your livelihood & how to do self assesment but i will strive to achieve greatness.

In my experience, you should always be prepared for client's information to be ambiguous/misleading/incomplete, whether that be deliberately misleading or just naive on behalf of the client.

SA tax is rarely as straight forward as we, or the client would like.
