Software for a Small Charity

Good Evening All

I have just become the treasurer of a small horse charity (volunteered by my wife). It has only just started and I have been doing the accounts using spreadsheets. When I did my, Not For Profit Org training and exam I used a time limited version of Sage 50.

Unfortunately, purchasing Sage 50 is out of the question and I have been scouring the internet to try and find an alternative to spreadsheets (tried VT cashbook, VT Transaction etc).

Does anyone have any ideas ?

Regards

Trevor

Hi Trevor,

In June I started keeping the books for a small charity - 8 employees altogether.  They were bought a copy of Paxton by a Trustee and having not used it before had a lot to learn very quickly.

I totally dislike it!  It is quite powerful as there are multiple funding streams available and you can set projects against these funds, so perfect for charities....or so you'd thought.

It's interface / window ledger is quite clunky with no autotype function and no way of drilling down on transactions - so no cognitive function really. Corrections are easy enough as you can either re-enter or delete entries, so that's fair enough.  However, when speed is called for, you can't really tab through the selections so you slow down bu having to use your whole keyboard and mouse.  Some of these things seem petty, but until you start using it you wouldn't know.

I prefer Sage or Quickbooks.  VT is good too, and they are all good as long as you get your departments set up :-)

Good luck.
