VAT on office meeting

Hi All

The company I work for had a staff meeting in the local pub back in May. The director that paid for the bill on the company credit card forgot to (or misplaced) the receipt. I finally got a copy from the establishment but is doesn't show VAT (not unusual for this type of business - same with restaurants). There is no VAT number on the receipt either. I have obtained their VAT number now, but can we use that against the receipt to claim back the VAT as an expense?

Your thoughts please.

Hi David

If memory serves me right, VAT may not be chargable.

When I was doing accounts with room hire it depended on two things:

  1. Room hire with no additional services such as food was not vatable
  2. If food was served then the Room Hire charge would be vatable.

Check with the HMRC, but you may find the receipt is correct and there isn't any VAT.

 Thanks for your input Jocelyn
