BA6 (Not for Profit) new syllabus

Hi, I wondered if anyone has any experience of taking BA6 ( new syllabus) ?  I failed the mock but having learnt from my mistakes I thought I might do OK in the real thing.  Unfortunately I failed by 1% !  I will have to resit but don't feel very confident having failed twice.

For me the main problem is the time limit of 2 hours.  57% of the marks are given to answers you derive from producing a full set of final accounts for a 'not for profit' organisation.  So, just over an hour to produce and check a full set of accounts!  Not only that but a mistake in dealing with one aspect (in my case depreciation) doesn't just mean 1 wrong answer but has a knock on effect resulting in a total of 5 wrong answers - that equates to 10% of your marks lost for one mistake!

I would like to hear how everyone else is getting on with all of the exams in Level 111 - new syllabus.  Obviously to get to BA6 I have passed BA4 (which I found really tough) and BA5 (which was pretty easy to do within the 2 hours).

Thanks 😕

Hi

I have joined the club I am afraid.  Having got 98% 100% and 99% in the various mocks for BA6 I have just failed my BA6 exam.  I am well miffed!!!

Does anyone know if you retake it if you get a completely different exam or do you get the same one?

Also I would be interested if anyone has paid the £25 to get a report from the ICB having failed an exam and how long it takes to arrive and whether it was useful.

Sigh!!!

Signing off - fed up - deflated!!!

Hi Sue, sorry to hear you failed BA6, especially after such good results in the mocks.  Did you fail by a narrow margin (as I did)?  If so, it may be worth checking everything and then contesting the result.  If you let me have your email address or telephone number I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi

It was an awful result cannot divulge!!!  Too ashamed.  Email is suerose.books@gmail.com.  Just working through my answers now.  I have been told by Training Link that the next one will be a different exam but I still need to work out where I think I went wrong.

Hi Sue

Don't be tooooo disappointed - it is frustrating BUT you will be able to nail down those areas you didin't do so well in:-)

Not all exams will give you a report however I assume you have been doing the ICB mock papers ( personally I think they are worth their weight in gold)

Be encouraged

Hi Sue

Just wanted to add to what others have said - I found BA6 pretty awful, and completely different to all the other exams before it. I had distinction passes in all the preceding exams, but it took me ages to pluck up the courage to sit BA6 as I found that I didn't do nearly as well as I wanted to in the mocks. I spent a lot of time revising - I am with Ideal Schools and their materials were a big help and I also did all the examples in David Cox 'Business Accounts' as well as the Kaplan revision manual. When I did finally sit it, I passed, but with a merit rather than distinction. I'm sure you will be able to do it too -just keep going over it. Good luck!

I dont believe it.  I have just took it again (BA6) and failed again.  I even had time this time to go back and check.  I was so confident it was correct.

Oh my lord.  I have requested a report to find out where I went wrong.  I know it costs but I need to know what is happening.

I suppose it just shows, having done so well in all the others, that I am not perfect after all.

 Hi Sue,

Dont worry. Everybody fails for the first time and then pass. You got very good score in mocks and I am confident you will pass in your second attempt. Best of luck.

Hi Sue,

How frustrating for you when you've done so well on the previous exams!

I failed a mock for BA5 and was devestaed (although pleased to say I passed the actual exam) but it's often just a couple of silly things you kick yourself for after the event.

I'm studying BA6 mysef now, so thanks for the heads up!  I think for me the problem is going to be with the pre-payments and accruals of subscriptions and then the acrcuals and pre-payments for for expenses that's going to get me!

I hope you get the answers you need from the results and at the risk of being cheeky, if it's anything worth sharing, it would be much appreciated!

Best of luck,

Tara.

Hi

I am afraid I don't but I would highly recommend you purchase the mocks from the ICB as they reflect the requirements of the exam better than the training providers ones in my experience.

Best of luck.

Regards

Hello Everyone,

I really struggled with B6 and failed. I have been revising a lot and my tutor gave me some practice questions which were helpful.

However, what I have found really, really helpful is this link;

http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/Images/8178acco2_tcm4-123832.pdf

The questions seem really similar to the exam. Hopefully after working through these I will pass.

Good luck everyone!

Hi Mary,

Thanks for this link. I have taken this exam twice now and failed both times. First time was only by 1 mark but the second time was even worse. The report at the end of the first attempt showed a few areas I lost marks in but the second was only one area, which was bittersweet. Income & Expenditure Accounts seems to be my achilles heel. I worked through a lot of the OCR A Level practice questions (which also seemed similar in principle to the exam) and actually felt a lot more confident in my second attempt but to come out even worse is a real confidence blow.
I am going to work through the questions in the link you have given and hope that it's enough to cement the knowledge required to pass next time.
I read that if you fail 3 times on 1 exam that ICB will block your resit attempts, meaning you cannot then resit that exam until either new exam papers are issued or a suitable amount of time has lapsed. Obviously now I feel a lot more pressure to pass next time out.

Feeling suitably deflated right now Cry as I've been doing pretty well up until now, feels like I've hit a brick wall.

Hi again

I just wanted to mention to you Laura that you are right.  I failed three times on BA6 and am still waiting to take it again.  You have to wait six months before taking the paper again if you fail it three times in a row.  I cannot resit mine until September.  I am told the reason for this is that they only do three papers and once you have taken them all then they will not allow you to resit the same papers.  It was a big blow to me at the time.  I nearly packed it all in, I was so despondent.

I would say take care.  The first time round I was totally confident I had passed and it really knocked me for six.  This made me very nervous both the second and third time around.   I was in total meltdown and on both of those occasions.  I had plenty of time left on both so went back over all my answers.  I questioned my original answers on the last question and then having changed all my figures ran out of time trying to get it to balance again and totally lost the plot questioning every single answer after I had finished the paper tweaking answers all over the place.

If you have found that you have time left at the end, take a little more time on the next occasion and when you move on to the next question be sure that the answer you have given is correct and do not go back!!!  Some may disagree!!!  I think if I had done that and not gone changing answers all over the place I might not be where I am now.

I believe although I got the answers wrong (obviously I did otherwise I would not have failed) I do actually know this stuff but when under pressure it adds a whole new dimension.  This is not reflective of real life as you would not be doing the work against the clock in real life.

I was recently comforted to discover that there are many people out there, some who are now MICB's,  who have actually failed some exams in the past.  I thought I was the only one and that gave me great comfort.

Let me know how you get on next time with any more tips please. We need to support each other at times like these.

Sue

Hello Mary

How toyou tackle the I&E account? I've found that setting up a Trial Balance from the Cashbook and extending this into an Extended Trial Balance helped me with this exam, especially for making the adjustmnts for the final accounts.

Just passed BA6 with 97%. Really happy as I want BA7 completed in August in order to get up and running. Some things I'v learnt from this paper:

  • Create an extended trial balance for the Final Accounts and do it in stages (ie if you need to calculate the accumulated fund enter all assets/liabilities and the accumulated fund balancing figure). Update this with receipts and payments and again balance. Calculate the adjustments making sure these balance and also double check when taking these to the I&E and B/S. It worked for me and allowed me to organise my workings.
  • Try and find two methods to the same result. Use a T account or simple addition/subtraction. I do this anyway at work but it's a good double check.
  • Reread all answers carefully. I find that some of the terms and wording deliberately try to trip you up. I can't go into too much detail but be careful of what you put for your answer. You have probably already worked out the answer required but the terminology can be sometimes confusing and direct you away from the correct result.

Good luck to everyone taking this exam. If you need anything I'll try to assist and help.

Dean
