Home office flat rate expense

Hello

So can any one help with the amount you can reasonably claim as a flat rate expense for a home office for the self empoyed, without having to dig out utility bills & bank statement's.

I have found £4per week as a claim amount for empoyed people seeking tax back & £10 per month on flat rate if you work over 25hours self employed.

But really struggling for proof you can claim for under the 25 hours & not have to produce all utility's & a percentage calculated amount.

Any one who already does this for a client & has the answer i thank you in advance!

Hi Lou

As you've indicated - I don't think there is a flat rate for someone that wishes to claim under 25 hours per month - the only option then is the original way as described here

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/BIM47800.htm

The flat rate option very clearly states that its only available if the hours exceed 25 hours as shown here

hello carol

Yeah i was going around in cirles with this yesterday, find hmrc site so frustrating! i might ring to find out, i'll keep you posted, thank you for taking the time to respond, how do you deal with this? i think most people want any expense they can think of taken off ther profit margin & this seems like a no brainer but the level of info is dismal.

Hello

so i took part in a HMRC webnar, verry good! the answer is keep record's to proove how you've got to your calculation amount!

Which sucks really as if your doing over 25hours you don't have to bother with record keeping or if your employed & claimimg tax back.

but all them pounds here pounds there add up so back dated bank statemaents a gogo
