Hi,

My name is Becki and I have recently started doing my Level 2 using the Kaplan study texts. I am a bit unsure as to what chapters are on the B1 and B2 exams and haven't seen that anyone else is using the Kaplan books.

If there is anyone using these books or has any past papers they could send me so I can have a better idea of what is on the exams I would be very grateful.

My email is: xxxbeckixxx@hotmail.com

Thank You in advance :)

Hi Becki

I am also studying for level 2 at home using Kaplan Study Texts. I am literally working through each chapter then will buy the online mock exams, From all the research I have done, Kaplan have written the books for most of the other Colleges, so I decided this was the cheapest way.

Good Luck

 Hi Becki & Katie,

I am also using the Kaplan Study Texts for Level 2. It is definitely the cheapest way. Does anyone know what the best computer package is for completing the computerised accounts section of Level 2? I work on an iMac and it looks as though I can't use Sage 50 on a Mac. I would appreciate your advice on this.

Thanks

Ruth

Hello Ruth

I'm going to be using Solar Accounts as I already have a licence for this but I've heard that the trial version is fully functioning with reports. I'm busy doing the Kaplan Assessment at the end of the book tomorrow and plan on doing the B3 Mock next week. If it all looks ok I'll let you know.

 Hi Dean,

Many thanks for responding to my question. I will be very interested to hear how you get on with Solar Accounts. I have not used this package before but am willing to use whatever works.

Good luck with the B3 Mock.

Thanks Ruth, I will post back after I'm done to let you know how it worked. I personally like Solar Accounts anyway as I find it simple and easy to navigate and the interface is good. Support is very good also. Hopefully it's good enough for B3 :-)

Hello, just an update to let you know I completed the Kaplan Assessment and the B3 Mock using Solar Accounts and it was more than adequate. It was a little tricky interpreting the reports back to Kaplan as they used Sage but saying that it was easy enough to review totals, chart of accounts, etc. As for the B3 mock, ICB don't presume you're using sage and they ask you for basic reports and minimal information which Solar can cope with (and I'd imagine most accounting software). I'll let you know howI get on with the actual B3 when I receive the results back.

Thanks

 Hi Dean,

That is good news. Thank you for letting me know. I have just signed up for a 30 day trial of Solar so I can start using it.

Hope all goes well for you with the actual B3!

Best wishes,

Ruth

Hello,

I too am using the Kaplan text but i noticed that chapter 6 dealing with the treatment of VAT where there is a discount for prompt payment is incorrect as since it doesn't reflect the amendments to vat rules made 1 April 2015 outlined here  http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/resources/news/business/amendments-to-vat-rules-/a/6095

Can anyone please advise if the mock and actual exams reflect the 'new' rules regarding  prompt payment?

Many Thanks

Hello Mrs L

I got 99% for both the mock and the actual and I was not aware of those rules (so thanks for pointing them out to me). Based on what I saw its the pre 01/04/15 VAT rules that are applied to the exams.

Thanks for replying. Seems odd that in order to pass the exam I'll have to do the opposite of what I do at work!! Hope I don't confuse myselfEmbarassed

I know it is odd as if you hadn't of mentioned it I wouldn't have know about it. I only joined the ICB in January and took the tests last month. I learnt the VAT discount method years ago and as I don't come across it in my current line of work I took it that the method hadn't changed as that's what the Kaplan book was telling me. Thanks again for pointing it out.

 Hi Dean,

I hope you don't mind me asking another question about Solar Accounts Smile

There is an online version of Solar Accounts. For Non-VAT-Registered Businesses: £9 per month. It says:

"This subscription gives users access to all features of Solar Accounts, except for VAT reporting."

Do I need the facility of VAT reporting when doing Level II B3 Computerised Accounts exam?

Kind regards,

Ruth

Hello Ruth, I use the offline version which offers a free 30 day trial with full functionality which can be downloaded from here:

http://www.solaraccounts.co.uk/download.php?flag=&p=win&online=false

With regards to the exam, it just wanted to show you applying the correct VAT rates and the Trial Balance account balancing figure and not the VAT returns and backing which is what I believe is what Solar relate to when they mention the reporting element. If you need anything else just give me a shout. Thanks... Dean

 Hi Ruth

I was just wondering how you got on with the B3 mock on the trial version of Solar Accounts. I use Sage 50 every day in work and know how to obtain the exact reports easily that the Mock has, I have downloaded the mock and downloaded the Solar Accounts free trial and the SageOne free trial but cannot seem to find the reports i will need.

Many Thanks

Karla
