I have experience of running a large payroll, but now I'm self-employed, would like to add it to my licence.  I have two prospective clients in the wings wanting payroll, so I'm looking at getting this set up sooner rather than later.  Can anyone recommend some software that I can use to do the ICB exam on, which is suitable for demo / exam data and is low cost or free?

Hi Penny,

Brightpay is very good and easy to use.

Free for up to 3 employees so I suppose that is out of the question for exam.

For single company it is £89 plus Vat per annum.

However, if you are looking to use it for clients then the bureau version is £199 plus Vat for unlimited clients and unlimited employees.

It includes Auto-enrolment and provides all letters if required. It handles Nest and Now Pensions and prepares CSV files for upload. Also handles other pension providers but I have not used these.

Also includes CIS and support is free.

There is also a 60-day free trial.

Payslips etc can all be done by email if required or printed.

There is a 'cloud' version available with a host of features but this carries extra charges per client as you can allow them to access it for payroll info - or just stick with desktop version if this covers your needs.

Thanks for the reply.  I had a look at Brightpay, but unfortunately, I cannot use it for earlier tax years which I need for the payroll exam.  Looks a good package though

Hi Penny,

Have you contacted Brightpay to ask if you could get a previous year?

I know you can download a previous year but maybe that is for existing users who are upgrading their PC.

However, Karen @ Brightpay is very helpful and if you are looking to use their software later for business who knows what they will do to help you.
