Payroll Software

I have a client who currently uses HMRC tools for their payroll. It appears that a more sophisticated payroll package is required for NEST pension contributions next year. Can anyone recommend a package that will assist with the auto-enrolment of staff into the pension scheme and can make via an electronic  link monthly employer and employee contributions to the pension scheme. I am currently looking at Brightpay.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi John,

I can recommend Brightpay as being superb for AE as well as everything else.

Price is also very good and support excellent.

I had used QTAC software for over 10 years - more expensive than others and no complaints really.

However, with AE looming and they were charging extra for the function I decided to move and actually did this mid year last year. Yes gave myself extra work moving all the clients but it was worth the effort.

I did trial a few others but found Brightpay (in my opinion) to be the best.

Hi John

I use Moneysoft Payroll Manager and find it really easy - and the support is excellent, both by email and phone

I have staged with 2 different clients using this software - both have been linked with NEST and I must say, it's been pretty easy.

1 of the clients had a particularly complex situation, where they were going straight in on the 8% rate, but for each year that their employees had been employed, the employer was paying 0.5% of their contribution, up to a max of 2.5%, so again, this was a challenge, but very easy using Moneysoft. I had to phone Moneysoft to find out how I set this up - and they answered it straight away and made it so easy.

The only other problem I've had is not realising I had to have a different group set up for each 'set' of employees at this complex client at NEST. Once this was explained to me, and set up by NEST, Moneysoft recognised it all and uploaded it all in much the same way as the RTI report, with the same lovely clear explanations that it's been done.

I'm so glad I've stuck with Moneysoft for this task :-)

Thank you Marilyn and Carol for your most helpful responses to my enquiry - I will follow up on both Brightpay and Moneysoft AE solutions.

I have a further question - for a small employer opting for a NEST scheme do they require middleware software that sits between the pension provider and the AE compliant payroll system. I understand that this software manages the assessments, documents and data that is communicated to the workers by the employer or can this requirement be met by the payroll software already discussed or by other means for a small employer.

Kind regards

Hi John

Not with Moneysoft Payroll Manager - I have no middleware. The information about contributions and / or newly enrolled employees can be submitted directly to NEST using a similar submit procedure to the RTI info for employees to HMRC. There are no complicated uploading of CSV files or anything, in my experience, it really is quite easy.

The communication letters are also in built into Moneysoft - you don't have to use these ones if you don't want, but they're very good and informative - and obviously have the wording correct as to how it has to be, so it's good to use them. Also, once selected to use them, you can also record within Moneysoft that they've been issued and what date it was done, so it's a good audit trail too.

Moneysoft also has all the assessment tools and reports which again are nice and clear and available in different formats to suit.

Hi John,

Brightpay will handle all communications to employees if required. I have setup some clients with NOW Pensions and they handle all this. You can disable all these comms in Brightpay if pension provider deals with it.

Brightpay has also setup with NEST where you can submit the info (same as you do for RTI) direct to pension provider without having to login to your pension portal to do it.

Currently I have to submit a CSV file (completed by Brightpay I might add) to NOW Pensions every pay period but I believe Brightpay will be updating this shortly so it is done automatically.

Brightpay are holding a webinar on 24 Aug at 11.00am for AE with a speaker fom NEST - you can apply here: (this one is free)
