SA query

For those of you who use HMRC software for filing tax returns:

When it asks for details of Tax Advisor do you complete this with your details or leave it blank?

Just curious as I normally leave it blank but had a client asking why I did not put my details there and my response was 'because I am a tax agent not a tax advisor'.

Hi

I use both HMRC and Taxcalc for completing tax returns and in both cases I put my name down as the tax advisor.

In taxcalc though it does actually state agent rather than advisor, but as I am the one who has completed it on behalf of the client and throiugh my gateway details my name should be there.

Thanks Liz.

Maybe someone from ICB could clarify?

Hi

I leave it blank when I do tax returns as the way I see it is I'm not giving tax advise, just completing the return from the bookkeeping records but perhaps I'm wrong - it would be good to get clarification - Perhaps the ICB could help

thanks

Good morning,

Just bringing this to the top of the list in the hope of getting a response from ICB.

Would hate to think I have been doing it 'wrong' all these years!

The way I see it:

If you are filing the self assessment and you have requested agent code (which you must have done), then surely you are the agent/advisor (whatever nomenclature wish to use), so you would put your details.

HMRC are going to contact you anyway.

Well, Accountsforme,

I would welcome a call from HMRC, at least that would clarify the situation. I have nothing to hide and I'm sure MM Bookkeeping dosen't either, we have merely interpreted it in a different way to you.

And yes I do have agent codes for SA, VAT and PAYE - I couldn't operate without them

I'll let you know when HMRC contact me.

regards

Well, looks like we all interpret this differently.

ICB state we are not permitted to give tax 'advice' therefore we are not a tax advisor.

I agree with CAP that we have agent codes to operate SA, VAT & PAYE on behalf of clients.

Of course HMRC will contact us if necessary as we are the 'agent' for the client.

Please could someone at ICB respond to this and clarify situation for all concerned.

Marilyn

PS I have had nothing to hide for the last 10 years!

I've always found that the easiest question to answer! It's all the others i try and avoid!!

DON'T TELL HIM PIKE :-)

(seriously, i just think it's so the very nice people at HMRC can contact you if they have a query)
