Charity Accounts

I've been asked to do a set of accounts (AND ALL THE ALLIED CHARITY COMMISSION STUFF) FOR A SMALL CHARITY. There is an Excel spreadsheet all completed and there doesn't seem to be much to it all really - except, having read the .gov guidelines for Examiners of charities, ICB membership isn't listed as an allowable examiner. As an MICB can I complete this role ? or do I have to find an ACCA/ACA/MAAT to do this ? so far the 3 people who do qualify as an Examiner have either wanted too much money or have let me down - and the charity is already non compliant for timely reporting - in other words everything is already overdue (not my fault I hasten to add). Can anyne help/advise please - urgently ???  thanks so much

Hi Flossie, I've just seen your post regarding the examination of Charity Accounts. I do charity accounts, and also the submitting of the accounts to the CC and an MICB does the external examination for those accounts each year ( sourced by the charity and not myself).

I am not sure from your post if you have been asked to prepare the accounts for this charity or independently examine them? You obviously can't do both!

If it's a small charity with less than £25,000 gross income per year then they are not required to have an external examination but of course some charities do choose this route to protect themselves and show transparency.

If you are preparing the accounts only then it is up to the charity to source an independent examiner and not you. This is the role of the Trustees and they should ultimately make the decision.

Although I haven't been asked as yet to independently examine any charity accounts, I was under the impression that our qualifications with the ICB qualified us for this role but I'm sure if this is wrong someone will correct me!

Hope you got everything sorted!

Hi Karen

Yes, it all got sorted out thanks. I did the examiner role. I worked out that below £25000 I could do it as I re-read the information. Someone else had done all the accounts prep, I verified what had been done, completed the Charities Commission paperwork and submitted them. Income was only £14,800. They've not come back as far as I'm aware so hoefully they were OK

Thanks for the reply

That's great Gill, glad you got it sorted - sorry I realise my reply was very late!
