After doing so well in all exams i am so upset to have failed BA6. I had done plenty revision and both mocks but still failed. I got 82%. Even though this is not far off from a pass i still dont know how i could improve as i went over the paper over and over. I dont know how else to prepare for the exam. Usually i find mocks very helpful as exam is similar but not this time!! really struggling with this! :( how many attempts do we get at sitting the exam?

Hi Sarah, I feel your pain.

I too did the BA6 exam yesterday. Failed also. Passed previous exams with good results and the mocks. Don't know where I went wrong. It's frustrating that you can't get detail of where I made errors.

I have got the Kaplan books and done the mocks. Any suggestions on where to get more reading on Non Profit Organisations and practice questions gratefully received.

Hang in there. Its tough. I failed both Mocks after having distinction in all other exams. It came down to making sure I didnt miss anything. Most of my mistakes were missing out things. It was very frustrating but in the end I managed to pass the actual exam with a merit. I was really sweating it though. Dont be tempted to rush and read carefully. Talk it through with your tutor if you have one. I have Ideal Schools and they are great at doing their best to fully prepare you for the exams. I would reccommend HMRC websites to read up on or any other to help with underpinning knowledge. I think ICB like to throw a curve ballor two to keep you on your toes. Hope all goes well

Sorry I can't post the actual link but if you google this:

76357 Unit FO12 OCR examination questions and mark scheme extracts

you should find there is an AS level Accounting PDF for download.

Good section on club and society accounts, also plenty of stuff for your BA7 - adjustments, errors, sole traders and p/ships.

Im about to sit ABA9 and still using it for practice for ltds, advanced p/ships and analysis.

Hope it helps and best of luck

im glad to know its not just me struggling with this. i phoned ICB and they said i get 3 attemps at this exams. first one obviously failed and two more attempts but i have so much anxiety over this i keep putting it off!! its the not knowing where i am going wrong and why i failed thats making me nervous. when i go over notes i think i understand everything which is why im scraed to do exams again! i attempted both mocks but still managed to fail this!! this has really set me back!! :(

I failed that one due almost entirely to formatting and rounding so make sure you're clear about this. For example I put £12.00 when they wanted 12 and £12.55 when they wanted it rounded down. Don't give up. :)

I just failed BA6 as well :(

I passed B1 - BA5 without issue.

I did well with the mock from Kaplan but the actual ICB exam was quite a bit different. Think I'll try ICB mocks before I try the real exam again.

Don't dont don't give up Sarah. You are so close to getting your practice licence.

ICB won't tell you what you got wrong but will give you the general areas so brush up on your revision of those. Is there is anything you are misunderstanding?

Did you self study or use a training provider? I know Trianing Link have their own mocks which you have to pass before they allow you to sit the real thing. Maybe you could use them for just B6 & B7? Yes it will cost and take a bit more time but what price do you put on your practice licence?

In addition to all that buy as many ICB mocks as you can taking the last as near as possible to when you resit the real thing. Any errors will be fresh in your mind.

Do you attend branch meetings? There's probably someone there who has had a similiar experinece but at the very least if you are feeling down other members will talk you back up and isnspire you to achieve your goal.

You've put a lot of work in so far so don't throw it all away. You managed B4 (which I found to be the real killer) so don't be phased by B6.

Best of luck!!

I've had my share of fails and it feels horrible. Don't give up. If you do fail a third time, it isn't the end of the world. It just means you have to wait 6 months before re-taking. However, my best advice is to make sure you get the formatting right. I lost marks because of putting an answer in the following format £3.00 when they wanted '3'. Other than that I suggest taking as many mocks as you can to get the hand of it. I've just got my practice licence and so can you. Good luck. x

Thanks for all your response everyone!

Peter r i am doing self study and really struggling with tutor support if im honest. sending them an e-mail is fine enough but its just the response time and actually wording a question so they understand what i mean! i don't know what else to study or to loook at. Kaplan literally only has one I and E question for non profit organisations. I have re sat mocks. And have done the kaplan revision kits. But course material is very limited for BA6.

However after doing all this again I have figured out that I am struggling with understanding how you would write off accrued subscriptions from the previous year? so if anyone can enlighten me that would be great! I have come accross a few scenrarios where for example accrued heat and light from 2014 was paid begining of 2015. And same idea for subscriptions, and for this I cannot work out what the workings would be ?? or would you do nothing different as you would normally do when you do adjustments for current year? (sorry so hard to explain what i mean!! )

Hi Sarah

You would write off subs by crediting the subs control a/c and completing the double entry by debiting the write off to Income and Expenditure a/c as an expense ( similar to how you would write off bad debt).

Does that help any?

Hi Sarah - don't give up!

Get hold of a copy of Business Accounts by David Cox (new or second hand at Amazon).  It has a really good chapter on CLub Accounts together with several scenario questions.

Also, Frank Woods' Bookkeeping & Accounts has a really good section.  (I got that one for a very cheap price second hand - it's the 2008 edition but it's been a standby for me).  It has a set of scenario questions as well.  His book tends to be more formal, whereas the David Cox book is phrased in more user friendly terms.

I did all of the questions over and over until I was getting every one of them right first time, without referring to any notes at all.  I also did every mock I could find until I was getting them totally right.  In the beginning I was forgetting something every time - and each time it was a different thing - but by the end I was getting them bang on, every time.

so when i draw up the subscriptions account to account for adjustments i would still include accrual bal b/f from for example from 2014 in dr and then cr same a/c with 2015 date (so effectively this is in the account twice ) and on top of that add any pre paid and accruals for 2015 to enter new adjusted figure in the income section? (sorry for all the questions) or would you just enter it once in the subscriptions account as a credit ?

hi chickie thank you i will have a look for books just now. I guess im doing the same just now. re doing all mocks and any revision i can but there is always that one small detail i need to look back to notes for to make sure i am doing it right. only 1 more attempt so really dont want to fail it as 6 months is a long time to wait for a resit!!

Hi Sarah

Forget about p/paid just for now :)

On dr side of your subs a/c you enter subs owing from previous year as this is income for different period regardless of whether it eventually gets paid or not.

If everybody who owed subs paid them in current year that amount would be included in monies received figure on credit side. If any amounts owing was written off you also have to credit subs a/c with the amount written off  - instead of the debit entry being the money going into the bank (or the biscuit tin) the debit entry goes to the expenditure section of the I and E.

So yes, whats owing is debited and whats paid/written off is credited.

Hope that makes bit more sense.

I'm studying with Training Link and sat their BA6 mock and got 100%.  It must have been a fluke as I've since sat the 2 ICB mocks and failed them both with 75% and 76%.  I don't know what to do now other than give up.  I don't want to put in for the exam until I've had more practice but the Training Link test papers don't really reflect the ICB exams so I just feel like I'm wasting my time doing these.  Does anyone have any ideas what I could try next?

hi pippa don't give up! hang in there!! I felt the same have a look at the reports for the mock and try and focus on those sections. further up this blog there s a really good link to study material which I found very helpful! have a go at that and see how you get on. you do get 3 attempts for this exam so try to keep calm and get yourself ready for the first one! if you fail you know you have 2 more attempts and a better idea of what the exam is actually like! good luck

Hi Sarah

Thanks for the message of encouragement.  I think I need to re-group, before attempting the real thing.  I have looked at both mocks and can see where most of my errors occurred.  I have contacted my training provider about those that I haven't been able to work through myself and am awaiting their response.  Can I ask, did the ICB mocks closely resemble the actual ICB exams?  I know the mocks I did for BA4 and BA5 were pretty similar to the real thing.

Thanks

Hi Sarah

I failed BA6 three times and I was devasted.  It put back my plans by six months as I had to wait for new exams to be written.   I was terrified when I took it for the fourth time but thankfully I passed.

My suggestion would be to go over and over the mocks redoing them all again and again and again until you get them 100% in particular the ICB mocks as they are much closer to the BA6 exam than any others for this exam.

If there is a particular area you are struggling I will try to help (suerose.books@gmail.com)

Keep at it.  You will get there.  I have since gone on and am now am MICB PM Dip.  If I can do it anyone can.

Good luck

Sue

I've just passed the BA6, I'm so happy and relieved.  Now onto the BA7, does anyone have any suggestions on the best course of action to tackle revision etc. for this?

Well done.  I am so pleased for you.

Keep plugging away at it and take as many mocks as you can would be my advice.

sarah how long did you actually have to wait to retake your exam for the 3rd time. i have been told it can be any time depending on when the exams change but no longer than 6 months  thanks

Hi all

Please do not despair.  As I said earlier on this email trail keep taking as many mocks and exams as you can lay yours hands on before attempting it again and also dont forget to concentrate on the questions which test your basic knowledge of bookkeeping in general.  If I recall there was a lot of these in this exam.  Watch out for the wording as well becasue what appears to be asked one way in one exam, with the tweak or twist of a word, can mean the opposite in another.

Just stick with it.  You will get there I am sure.

Best of luck  Sue

Hiya,

Has anyone got any recomendations for other study material - i am with Kaplan and they have just one section in their book i feel i just need some more

Thanks!

HI Sarah,

I have found that this has been the hardest topic so far!  I sat two mocks and failed them both 60% and 71%, but then purchased a live one and just scraped a pass with 85%.  I felt like my life was on hold while focusing on this exam.  I just hope they don't test any of the BA6 content in the final BA7 exam.  I really struggle with the final question which is work 52% of the marks.  You will get there with practice :-)
