Remote bookkeeping and software

Hi, I am looking for a bit of insight into how you work with your clients and different software packages.

I am currently in the early stages of setting up working from home as a self employed bookkeeper. I do not have that much experience with different software packages and wanted to know how they work in terms of you having access and your client having access too?

Also, I obviously don't want to purchase lots of different accounting software, so how does it work if one your clients works with quick books and the other with sage? Do these packages allow remote access?

Or if the client does not have any software themselves and I offer to have an account with Quickbooks how would they be able to access it if they want to? Also can you have a number of different clients on one quickbooks package?

Sorry lots of questions and some may seem a bit daft or obvious but I am just starting and it's really hard to find this information online and would love some insight for some experienced people.

Thanks in adavance

Key tip, don't get bogged down on the cost of software, recharge the cost to client. Get the software that gets the job done best. Far to many bookkeepers go for the cheapest software, worried that the client won't stomach the cost, if they can't afford good tools, they are not worthy of your time.

In my practice we only use one accounting software, if it is not good enough for a client for some reason, we won't take on the client.

Hope this helps.
