New app calculates your tax and how it is spent

The Government is today launching a free new tax calculator enabling people to work out how much tax they pay and how the Government spends it.  The downloadable 'app' is a response to new figures that estimate over half of taxpayers (57%) do not know how much income tax and National Insurance they pay in a year, suggesting that many people find the personal tax system remote and confusing...

Grandmother involved in £55,000 tax fraud

Two women from Newcastle upon Tyne, who didn't need an 'app' to help them with their taxes, have been sentenced for falsely claiming they were paying huge childcare costs to increase their tax credit entitlement. A childminder, who is also the grandmother of the children involved and helped provide false evidence, was also sentenced today. Local hero jailed for failing to declare £2m

An IT consultant who failed to declare almost £2 million of income, was jailed for 5 years today for tax fraud. Stephen Maxwell (53) was hailed a hero for rescuing fellow passengers in the 2007 Cumbria train disaster in 2007 which killed one passenger.  An HMRC investigation showed he had paid no tax for 9 years before the crash....
