Would you believe it, I just checked my results page and I passed with 93%. Thankyou ICB for marking it so quickly. I am so relieved. I hope I can now get some payroll clients as the last year has been pretty bad for my family due to my husband's redundancy (happened in the last recession too).

Any advice regarding payroll outsourcing would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck to everyone else taking the exam.

Thanks Tony, very kind of you.

I noticed you have the payroll qualification. How easy/difficult have you found it to obtain payroll clients?

By the way, what is the difference between "reply" & "quote"? This Forum stuff is a bit confusing for an old girl like me (52 to be precise, and don't care who knows it)

Hi Kate

Well done on getting your exams.  My advice would be to let all your current clients know that you are providing a payroll service.  I personally think payroll is very time consuming a
if only clients gave you their payroll in order that would be great but in reality that does not always happen especially if hours are adhoc . It is a hard area to get into as there are some companies that will do payroll for £1 a payslip.

My recommendation is to offer it as service as part of trying to get new clients , ie where you do their payroll , management accounts and monthly bookkeeping one stop shop . My experience that clients like if you can do all 3 it makes it easier for them, it worked for me for 10 years .  Remember if someone else is doing your clients payroll , then they could be tempted to move the bookkeeping as well.

Thanks for all the congrats, but feeling even more despondent now about getting my practice off the ground. Thought payroll would really help. Admittedly, only been marketing myself for a relatively short time. Some people seem to have clients fall into their laps - guess I'm not one of them!Frown

Hi Kate

Please don,t feel despondent,  it sounds like you are in your early years.  Some of the Fellows and members have been going for a long time, and yes it does get easier .  I found the first three years really difficult to get going.  I posted on words of wisdom about  about how to get going and on one of the others .

I can guarantee  your Payroll Qualifications will stand by you .  I believe in order to grow your business you need to cover all areas.

The members and Fellow members who have a lot of work coming in, will have a huge range of experience. Most of my higher rate paid work involves in house training.   I can only do this because I have covered so many areas since I was 20.  I always read blogs, accounting Web , HM Website, General Business news,  have a good relationship with local accountants .  The day you stop learning and asking questions , is the day I think you should give up this job.    My clients email me every week almost as a business resource , and ask me about areas that I know or also that are not my expertise.  I never pretend I know something but I will always know of an accountant or an expert in that field and get back to them.  Most  good clients appreciate honesty and I have never lost any business by been honest about areas that are not my strong point , there is nothing worse then bad advice.

The more experience and qualifications you have to offer the client  , the more interested they will be.   I treat every new client almost as if I am going for an interview.  If you do get a phone call, really try to find out about what their business is about.  I would always suggest that you go to their office and try and do some research about the business or trade and find some interesting topics to talk about that is of interest to their trade.

Hope this helps as I know we are in the middle of a recession and it is hard.

Hi Sarah

Many thanks for your advice and encouragement. It is fantastic having yourself and Stewart, as Fellows, offering the rest of us your support and guidance with your years of experience.

I started my career in 1980, after University, as a student Chartered Accountant, but hated the auditing and failed my PE1, then left to work in the city and made it as far as an Assistant Financial Controller for a city gilt dealers. However, once I had the first of my two girls in 1987 I became a full-time mum, then part time admin when they were older, and only returned to the accounts field a couple of years ago, so been out of the loop for a while. This is why I took the ICB exams to update my skills, and I have really enjoyed studying again in my 50's!!!.

I always loved incomplete records when I was a student, in fact the practice asked me to stay on in 1982 & join this department but I declined, and think I did pretty well considering I wasn't qualified.

Just finding the whole marketing/networking side quite daunting, but I did have some good news last night reagrding potential new client (payroll).

Thanks again for the advice. Off for the weekend now, with my husband and two girls, to stay with my family in Cheshire, which is always great fun.

Hope you have a great weekend also.

Hi Mary

Thanks for all your encouragement. I have actually had a pretty good week new client wise. The advertising seems to be paying off.

Good luck with your studies.

Hi All,

yes I have had the same trouble, getting clients when I was self employed 2 years ago. Now I cannot seem to get any work because nobody has heard of the ICB, or so they say. I am now doing a degree with the open university, in accountacy and have done bookkeeping in it. Got 3 years to go though before I am finished. I have done this because everybody has heard of the Open University, and it has given me something else to do since I cannot find much work out there. I did my Payroll diploma 2 years ago, and I have found that this is easier than general bookkeeping, although bookkeeping is not really hard.

Kind Regards

Hi to all.
Congrats to all of who have already passed the exam.
I've started to study Sage Payroll at Home Learning  College a month ago. At the moment I have 9 more assignments to pass, plus the Mock Exam.
All the best to all of you!
