Self Assessment penalties

Hi,  I just had a question from a potential self employed client who has not done a tax return in the last 2 years.  Does anyone have an idea of how much or what rate he could be fined at?
Thank you.

Hi LWB

He will get the automatic £100 fine for the lat return which will be topped up by nother £100 fine if the self assesment form is not filed by 31/07 so if your potential client has not filed a return for two years they are looking at £300 in fines plus interest on any tax owed.

Late return Jan 09        £100.00
Still Outstanding Jul 09 £100.00
Late return Jan 10        £100.00

However I am not sure if the 1st return would attract a further £100 for still being outstanding at Jan 10.

Who is doing his self assesment returns.

Kind regards
Stuart

Hi

Has the potential client registered as self employed?

The reason I ask this, is because if they have they'll know what the penalties are for 2009 by now, although I appreciate they may not have told you this.

Hi Stuart & Tony,

Thank you for your advise.  I plan to do his self assessment as soon as I pass the required exam.  I am waiting for the exam from ICB.  He is registered as self employed as he gave me his UTR, but didn't mention he was aware of fines.  I mentioned to him that he will be fined and said I would find out more to give him an idea.  Thanks again.
Regards,
Lindsay
