I have just started my own practise and already have 40 hours work per week I can't believe how quickly it has all fallen into place.

Granted I had a bit of an easy start because my girlfriend owns a company which I took over the books for as soon as I got my practise licence but that was only a couple of days a week. Since then I got work for a small company which will be only a couple of hours per week and have now just got a part time job working freelance for another company 20 hours per week.

This latest job is working directly for an ACCA qualified accountant. They were impressed with my skills and knowledge when I applied for the job but had never heard of the ICB. I pointed them at the ICB website if they wanted to check what my qualifications meant and hey presto I got the job.

I know I've been incredibly lucky but I hope it encourages others to get their practise off the ground.

Thanks Stuart.

All my clients are associated with the music industry - I never intended to specialise. What they all have in common is income from bars, PRS payments and FEU payments. None of which I would put outside the remit of general bookkeeping, but it seems that clients may.

Well done. I got 5 clients with in about 2 weeks of deciding to go for it and that's all that I can manage at the moment until my little one starts school.
Only 1 client hadn't heard of the ICB.

Congratulations to you.

I too wish I was that lucky. I set up as self employed and got my insurance and practice licence back in September last year. Am still waiting for my first client.

Hi All,

How did you manage to get clients? Where did you advertise?

Kind Regards

Hi Paula

I didn't advertise, like I said I was lucky in that my girlfriend runs a company. But for the latest job I applied for as many part-time bookkeeping jobs as I could. Fortunatley this company are happy to pay me as freelance rather than as an employee. I would have done either just to get the work/experience but it is better for me to put all my income through my practise rather than have income divided between PAYE and self-employed.

If I had been unsuccesful my next step would have been to produce some business cards and start visiting small companies. I'm pretty sure success brings success and once you have a couple of clients it is easier to find more, through word of mouth or contacts you build up with other companies.

Good luck.

Hi All

Just to update on my last post. I have done a lot of advertising by way of leaflets, directories and letters etc. Had a few enquiries but nothing came of it. Got people going to the website but they don't seem to get any further.

My latest mail out of letters and flyers may have worked though. I have an appointment with a local accountant on Tuesday to discuss building a working relationship. First real nibble. Am nervously excited about it. If anyone has any tips or advice before I go please share, it would be very well received and appreciated.

Hi all,

Sorry to keep you in suspenders !!!

I met with the accountant on Tuesday and we had a brief chat. He basically said that they are quite a large firm, somewhere in the top 25. They are Wilkins Kennedy if anyone has heard or dealt with them. They regularly receive clients wanting bookkeeping, this is the work they outsource as they prefer to stay on top of the real accountant stuff. He also mentioned they have a few bookkeepers details but they seem to have enough work and cannot take on any more. He also had had a couple of enquiries recently that he is now going to get in touch with.

Fingers crossed that something comes of it, as all my advertising and leafleting seems to have fallen on dead ground.

Meanwhile if anyone has any tips that I may not have thought of then please feel free to let me know.

David.
