I understand that you can't print the reqiured reports from the HMRC software and others have recommended 12Pay which I think comes with a free trial. Try searching the forum as there was a very recent thread about this...

Hi Acorn

Clare is spot on - you can't , for love nor money, print off from HMRC quite a few of the reports you'll need - I wasted a lot of time trying.  I opted for moneysoft and now use it for one of my client's payroll - pretty straight forward. Smile

I use moneysoft now after Sage increased their prices to silly money! I actually prefer it, the reporting is much better and I find it is quicker to use. Moneysoft do a free trial.

I am somewhat confused as to what actual payroll software is used for the Payroll Management Diploma exam as I am currently looking at various PMD courses - some use Sage 50 Payroll, some Sage Instant Accounts!  Can anyone clarify the ICB position on the exam?  I have almost finished Sage50 Payroll Levels 1 & 2 courses, and want to start the course after New Year.

You can use any software eg Sage Instant, Sage 50, Moneysoft.  There are some free trials on the web that can be used I believe. Try seaching the forum for 'Payroll' as this has been discussed before. ( Sorry, I don't know how to insert a Hyperlink!)
As you have done the Sage courses you could  also download the mock exam from the ICB shop and see how you get on and this would give you an idea of what is required.

Hi,

When I did my payroll exam I used 'Payroo.com'.  It is free (up to 9 staff), online and simple yet accredited by HMRC and comprehensive.  It generated all the reports I needed.  I suggested it to one of my clients who is a CA as an alternative to investing in SAGE and they agreed.  You have to put up with the odd advert on the screen as that is how the software is financed, but for small businesses it is excellent value.

Good Luck,

James Craig

I used SAGE 50 to do the payroll exam as that is what came with my training package. However now I practice payroll I use MONEYSOFT. Much cheaper £132.00 per year which includes unlimited number of clients and all the updates for tax rates ect. Its sooooo simple to use and if you make a mistake you can just change it (Unlike sage). ALSO you can print payslips on blank paper in a veriety of diferent formats. You can also test the software for 30 days (Full test including all the printing facilities ect). After that you just pay the annual fee and continue where you left off.

For the exam I used Sage Instant - I got a temporary version with the course.  However in the 'real world' I use the HMRC's own 'Basic PAYE'.  I find it a lot easier and quicker than paid for payroll stuff.  The only draw back is that you have to produce your own pay slips, but that is easy to do on Word.  Clients email me the hours/wages etc and I email back the pay slips (on word) and the details of what they need to pay the HMRC.  It is all straightforward.

When you come to payroll in the 'real world' I'd stick to the HMRCs own software - there is no charge, it is free to download, it automatically updates any HMRC changes, it keeps a record of all the staff and all the data is recorded straight onto the P11s.  You can also easily operate the payroll of multiple companies.  It is very easy to do any in year submissions (basically just one click).  The only real drawback is if the company has more than 9 employees (I think it is nine) as the year end submission cannot be done directly from Basic PAYE, but it is easy to submit the relevant data directly through the HMRC website.
