Advice needed regarding training books and software....

Hello,

I'm hoping to start my own bookkeeping business.  I have previously managed the accounts for my own business in the past (small Limited company, including payroll) and for various non profit making organisations but my experience is about 7 years out of date.

I understand I will need to take the Level 1 & 2 Manual exam and the Level 2 Computerised exam to get a practice license.

Please would you advise if I am on the right track....

I thought I should purchase the Kaplan ICB Bookkeeping Beginner and Intermediate Bookkeeping book and work through those on a self study basis?

I've just seen the latest offer from Groupon for £59 for the Sage Accounting Course (apparantly 80% off).  Is this going to be the most economical way for me to get through the computerised exam?  I previously used Quick Books (some years ago) for my own business and am quite computer literate.

I envisage that I will need to purchase my own software for running client accounts at some time in the future and am undecided on which software package to use at the moment.  I'm also intending to try to work on a fixed fee basis (aargh - feeling brave??).

Any advice on starting up would be gratefully received.

Thanks so muchSmile

Hi.  Did you make a decision and get started on your studies?  If so, how is it going?  I am about to sign up on a course this week but, like you, am struggling to make a decision on whether to try to study myself or to enrol with a training provider.  Any thoughts or comments on your experiences would be really useful....  Thanks.  Miranda
