Bankrupt but want to qualify as a bookkeeper including SAGE

Hi all,

I am hoping to start a bookkeeping course with the ICB however i was made bankrupt in DEC 2009 but have not yet been discharged. I have not heard much from the insolvency team since the bankruptcy apart from some paperwork a few weeks after it happened so i assume I will just receive discharge papers in Dec as this will have been 3 years?

I assume that I have to have my discharge papers before I ask the ICB to review my case? How do I get in contact with them to ask them to email me their policy?

I am looking to take the course at my local college and understand that being bankrupt does not affect me studying but does affect my membership and from what i can tell it could possibly affect me taking the exam (home learning not sure about a college)?
If I am able to take the exam and not get the membership would this mean that i can work for example at a school but would not be able to work on a self employed basis or do you have to be a member to be employed in this area full stop?

I have a real passion to do this so want to get as much info as possible and start getting the wheels in motion.

Thank you for reading

Hi Heather.

You'd probably be best to call the ICB and get them to clarify the situation given your specific situation.  The number is 0207 613 8484. They are really helpful and friendly and will look at your case individually and advise you further before you start paying for any courses.
Good luck, and I hope you get the response you need as you sound very enthusiastic.
