Salary Expectations

Can anyone help with advice on salary expectations as a bookkeeper?
(I know its likely to vary across the country.)
I have been with my current employer for 2 years without any increase, so I wish to make a convincing argument for modest increase if possible. Or should I just count my blessings and keep schtum?

I use Sage 50 and have a good understanding of the Report Writer too with experience of creating layouts and templates. The job entails inputting and processing of Sales (including Quotations & SOP) and Purchase invoices, including stock control and related. In addition, complete banking function for a number of accounts including credit cards and currency accounts with appropriate reconciliations almost daily, as well as processing all payments.

The company does have an accountant who pops in once a month to create management reports so I don't get involved with those.

But in addition to the Bookkeeping, I also process the Imports, and arrange despatch and documentation of the Exports, including Intrastats, and VAT returns.
I love my job and like the variety, and the fact that I have responsibility for so much, but I feel that £21k p.a, may be on the low side.
Any one have any views on this?

Thank you

Having gone the self employed route I am probably ot the best source of information but I can say that here in the London/Croydon area there are full time bookkeeping posts for positions that cover less (according to the blurb) at around the £25k to £30k mark.

Take a look at www.cv-library.co.uk don't think you have to register to look, only if you want to put your CV on the site.

Hi

Reading your post and level of experience and taking into account what my clients pay people for similiar roles I would say your salary was fair.  It is just an opinion and if you can get more go for it. Smile

Thanks for the replies.
I will look at CV Library again. I actually got my current job by putting my CV online there but never thought of looking there for average salaries.
But what I have seen in general, in the market place (local papers, local agencies etc) has been disappointing. I would have thought good Sage 50 skills would really open doors - but I may be looking in the wrong places.
I know London salary would probably be higher but then I would have to live there and I cannot face the crowds or even face commuting again from Buckinghamshire, so I will remain where I am at the mo.
Thanks again

London weighting may make the salaries look nice but as you say the costs are very off putting.
Commuting can be a nightmare with all the delays, cancellations etc and the extra time one has to allow and annual rail passes are expensive!  I live in zone 6, the cost of an annual card to get me to central London is £1708 which works out at an approx £7 per journey for an average working year (based on getting the annual card which has a cost saving build it - buy a weekly and the cost is £8.50 a day), and statistically if you travel by public transport you will have twice as mny coughs and colds as from travel by car.

These and other useless facts are supplied by the management at no additional charge Kiss
