Hi all

Apologies for not postong before - tax return season has been horrid but now complete this end! Hurrah!!

Next meeting is set for 13th feb, but for some reason its not showing in the shop yet.... At the moment we don't have a speaker, so I'm thinking we maybe just do a clinic type session - bring a problem/ question and we will see if we can jointly help! We might do this in smaller groups to make it less exposing :-/

Anyway - usual place - Round Foundry in Leeds Centre, 3pm - 5pm on Thursday 13th Feb. Book in when you can, but stick it in your diaries now!

Many thanks

Alex

Good to see everyone at todays meeting, a very useful discussion session.

Just as a P.S. to the discussion about Registering for Data Protection. I went on to the website www.ico.gov.uk and you can complete a quick online questionnaire which will tell you if you need to register or not.

Having completed the questionnaire I apparently am not required to register currently.

Could be a useful tool to make your decision?

Best wishes

Hi Karen, before I registered I noticed this too and contacted the ICB for clarification.  Apparently we have to register as part of our conditions of our practice licence, therefore I registered. I did notice another discussion about this somewhere else on the forum a while ago and there was a lot of confusion about it. Maybe contact the ICB for further clarification if you are concerned.

I really enjoyed the meeting today, I was quite apprehensive as it is the first one I have attended... glad to see everyone was so friendly and approachable. I look forward tothe next one :)

Hi Jennifer

I found the meetings extremely useful when I was starting up. It really helps me to have the forum and fellow bookkeepers to ask for help & advice when I need it.

I think we all need some clarification on the Data protection registration from the ICB on the website as it wasn't mentioned as part of the registration process when I joined. I am certainly confused as to what the situation is and would appreciate either a yes or no answer! It seems daft that some members are registered and some not?

Perhaps it depends on what bookkeeping work you are doing?

If the website states I don't need to register then surely that should be correct?!

Im confused?!

I agree with you on that one Karen. I was under the impression that it is because we have to collect personal details for MLR and also becausewe are processing financial information, but I could be mistaken.
Once question I want to put to the rest of the group who attended, I know Alex touched on the subject of advertising and mentioned hibu, but what methods of advertising do others tend to use? So far I have a facebook page and a website and appear on the top of the Google search for bookkeepers in my area, and when I completed my practice licence application it stated that I would be placed in the yellow pages (but the next edition doesn't come out until around October...), I am also registered on yell.com, bkpr.com and Google plus. Does anyone advertise anywhere else?

Thanks for the feedback Sharon, and I hope your dad is okay. I look forward to meeting you at future meetings. I spent pretty much all day yesterday signing up to free advertising websites (whilst sipping on some lovely wine to make the task less tedious...) but also received a couple of potential new client enquiries which was quite uplifting.

Hi all,

This is my first post here, so please be gentle!

On the matter of Data Protection registration, I called the ICO sometime ago and was advised that if I was simply doing bookkeeping and not submitting self assessment returns, I did not need to register.  During the conversation, I confirmed that I would be carrying out client ID checks so would have some personal information and contact details for clients but this did not change their comments.

However, reading the information on the ICO website (including taking the online assessment), it appears that if I were to keep the client ID or contact information on a computer (which almost everyone does these days), I would need to register, regardless of the work being conducted.

I have also found a self assessment guide which you can download from the ICO, in there question 5 lists a number of professions which must register.  Whilst bookkeepers are not mentioned, similar professions such as accountants and auditors, consultancy and advisory, pensions administration and provision of financial services and advice were mentioned - even childminders need to register!

I have found two statements on the ICB website (not the forums), one saying they expect us to register and another saying that if you process personal information and pass it on to 3rd parties, you must notfy the ICO.

In summary, without reviewing the actual legislation, I think we definitely need to register because we are most likely going to keep some personal information on the computer and even if we didn't, I think it would be extremely diffucult to argue that we do not fall into one of the professions I mentioned above.

End of war and peace!

Cheers

Mike
