Old Syllabus / New Syllabus - Where to re-study???

I'm Completely Lost!!! To start with I didnt realise that my qualification's had an expiry date like food.

I qualified on the old syllabus Level 2 manual & computerised in Aug 2008, I then attended networking meetings locally 3-4 times a week for approx 6month's with no luck of recruiting any possible client's, I lost heart and carried on with the day job.

Then approx 6months ago I re-evaluated my life & thought this day job is really not what I want to do long term.... I have no future prospect's and want to have a career in Bookkeeping, that is where my heart is,  that's when I realised my qualificatrion's had expired, I contacted ICB got some advice thatthere was a new syllabus, that i would need to study..... but I'm confused as to whether i need to re-study???

Do I re-studly Level 2 manual & computerised bookkeeping on the new syllabus (to refresh myself with my previous skills which I havent used) or jump straight in at level 3 on the new syllabus to take my career forward???

Any advice..... Gratefully received!!!  or you can email me: donnajohnson386@gmail.com

Hi Donna.

i had a similar problem and found Dave at Training-link very helpful. I'm sure he could point you in the right direction, you may need an upgrade.

Hope that helps

Hi Donna,   i've been in a similar situation.  I have level 1 & 2 manual & computerised and set upon level 3 under my own steam with manuals from Kaplan though under the old syllabus.  Basically due to time constraints and lack of committment (when no one is telling you there is a deadline for an assignment it it easy to drift....)    Now the new syllabus has been introduced I am doing the AICB upgrade.  I would advise grabbing a good study guide and working through some of that(check what is available at the Library (Frank Woods are good and I believe the ICB have produced one also))    then contacting a few providers and seeing whats on offer.  Try and get some of their practice texts so you can see if they talk your language.  If possible ask for some practice questions,  the company I am currently studying with give you ambiguous questions and quite frankly it is really annoying because it is slowing me down and making me lose heart ( rant over).  With regards job hunting have you thought about the scheme the icb flagged up last year in regards to mentoring?   If you are prepared to 'invest' can you afford a practice licence to help another bookkeeper out even on free for a few hours a week basis?   Good luck!      Wendy.

Sorry I dont get on here much, I'm Just frustrated with my current predicament, Qualification Expired in 2011, Trying to get a food in the door of a company to gain experience, but no one will employ me without a qualification or experience which is the most frustrating thing in the world, how are we ever to get any experience if no-one give you that foot in the door???

I'm restudying L2 on new syllabus, which I'm finding much more difficult than last time, on the old syllabus!

 Hi Wendy,

Thanks for your reply, help and advice, I have started L2 again on the new syllabus, but it seems alot more difficult that the old syllabus, and im only at the end of chapter 1, I just couldnt get my head around the terminology, (as i went back to the day job of ambulance driver/ controller) completely different I know, and as the old saying goes with any skill or qualification or knowledge: if you dont use it, you loose it, Hence I'm trying to get a foot in the door anywhere to do bookkeeping, I'd even volunteer if i could to gain some experience, (I have no intention on pinching someone elses client's for myself - I'm not that kind of person) Im just looking for someone to take me under their wing for 6months to a year, maybe longer...

I will definitely look into the library for more easier to read & understandable books, & i have thought about the mentoring service, I think i would definitely value from it,

Please dont lose heart, stick with it, and rant as much as you like,  I Lost Heart and went to the day Job & look where its got me..... Back at square 1

I currently work 17 x 12hr shifts, so have at least 10days a month (inc weekends where i would be willing to volunteer - If anyone needs a hand, I'd be more than willing & happy to help, please get in contact: Donnajohnson386@gmail.com

I will invest in a new licence again once im qualified, but not until then, Once again thanks for all your help & advice

Donna
