Hi there - I'm a qualified CIMA but that was some 20 years ago and now looking at getting the bookkeeping qualifications - so was just wondering if anyone can give an idea of how long it would take to do the exams and become a fully qualified bookkeeper? I'm currently a Finance Manager and considering a change of role with bookkeeping something that I have always wanted to do.

You can take the exams when you want so it depends on if there is anything in it that you don't already know.

Hi.

I am part qualified CIMA, also from 20 years ago, but the lure of ski seasons and living abroad tempted me away from completing level 4 and I worked outside of finance until I had to leave my job 3 years ago due to health reasons.

I then re-trained as a bookkeeper as it was something I could do part-time whilst I recuperated (and I love spreadsheets and numbers!).

I became qualified as a full member with payroll and self assessment in less than 4 months; that was with doing about 15 to 20 hours of study each week.

I studied with Ideal Schools who were great.  They offer a really personal service and were very happy to help with me fast-tracking my studies, and ensured a very quick turnaround of assignments, etc.

Being CIMA qualified, you won't be learning anything you haven't done before (although some of it may be somewhat rusty and hiding deep in the depths of your memory if you are anything like me).

Good luck.  Best thing I ever did was become self employed again.  :-)

Hi Miri

i've been doing manual and computer accounts for over 20 years, with about 12 being in sole charge of everything.  I started last September with Ideal Schools I've gained my payroll level 111 in payroll Management passed with distinction level 11 in bookkeeping and accounts and am currently taking the exams for level 111

i hope to be fully qualified by September so a year with payroll, I work 15 hours and study at every opportunity with 2 kids a dog and manage to stay on top of all household chores.  I hope that gives you an idea, however you sound like you have more qualifications than I to start, so it's up to you

to estimate how long it will take, under a year.

Hope per that helps if you need more info don't hesitate to contact me

regards

Thanks all - my next question was going to be what you found the best method of study but you seem to have answered that - I presume the institute will have all the text books I need to wade through should I choose to go down that route. I think it's just a case of brushing up for me I guess so I'm hoping what I come across won't be too difficult and I'll get through reasonably quickly.

How do you get started once you become a qualified bookkeeper? Are you just handed a stack of paperwork by clients and then just make your way through it, compiling trial balance?

Hi all

I am a returner also.  I took B1 and B2 in 2007 but then decided not to pursue setting up my own business but I have decided this is the way forward now .  I am retaking them from scratch because I want to make sure I know everything and this time I am including Payroll.  I am with Training Link and so far I have taken my B1 again and now on B2.

When I did it before I had two clients plus my husband who is self employed.  I used to pick up the receipts from the local pub and my other client used to drop them round but I cannot even remember now how much I used to charge.  My questions would be around how much you can charge so I can work out how many clients I need to give me a decent part time income.  I am retiring from my full time job in October and hope to get stuck into the bookkeeping world then.  If anyone has any advice  on charges or anything at all for start up0 this would also be very welcome.  My target market will be sole traders, builders, hairdressers that type of thing.
