Differences in N.I on payroll mock

Hi everyone

does anyone else have this problem - when doing a payroll mock the N.I is different from the suggested answers. I'm using Moneysoft and they use the exact method but the answers are slightly different. Do you get marked down for this or is their a tollerance ??

dont want to fail the exam for something I have no control over.

Hi Cap, I noticed this with Moneysoft, a couple of pence different? in my case it was something to do with rounding - if you do a search you'll find a fuller explanation :-)

Best of luck,

Hi Simone

I've already checked that and the 'rounding' is turned off so I'm still at a loss but thanks for replying

I think though the mock answer uses Sage and that does something funny with rounding - I'm sure there was a thread on here before about it.  You could always check with the ICB though :-)

Please see this thread

It seems to be a problem. If the ICB mark the paper based on - how Sage works then, as you say you fail (as the pass mark I believe is 85+ %).

The ICB really do need to clarify this - Perhaps Jacquie could comment ?

Spoken to Moneysoft regarding this and they seem to think its because other providers are using the 'old' table method and Moneysoft  and some of the others use the exact method which HMRC prefer.

It would be good to find out if the ICB do deduct marks for the inconsistency and if so why because they don't specify that you have to use Sage

Hi,

I don't know if they deduct marks for the inconsistency or not but i passed very recently using Moneysoft, I spotted the same thing with the mock and suspected that the ICB would treat both methods as being correct but that's just my hunch :-)

I'm just doing the 2015/16 mock and have found the same problem with using Moneysoft Payroll.  I did a calculation on the HMRC website with their calculator of the Employee NI and the figures came out the same as Moneysoft and NOT the ICB mock paper.

Did you get any clarification from ICB about this?  I was planning on sitting the exam tomorrow, but will maybe put it off if this will cause a fail.

Hi Cap,

I passed using moneysoft so think it was ok, i suspect that it all balances out e.g. HMRC&Moneysoft might have a few pence different to Sage but over the course of a year it works it.  Just a hunch but i passed ok.

Best of luck,

Simone

Hi Todetak

I actually spoke to Jacqui Mount regarding this and they do allow a small difference but all I will say is check and check again as there are diiferences between Moneysoft and HMRC. I have actually passed the payroll exam now using Moneysoft so good luck with yours - hope it all goes well.

kind regards

Thank you for your reply CAP.  This gives me more confidence in sitting the exam with Moneysoft, although I have no alternative software to use as the 180 day trial of Sage Instant Payroll I purchased with the workbooks to study from only uses 2013/14 and this exam option has been discontinued when i spoke to ICB which was dissapointing.

Can I ask you CAP about the reports you submitted for your exam?  The Moneysoft reports differ from Sage reports and I noticed on the Employee details report on Moneysoft doesnt' show the holiday entitlement, but I found a seperate report for that, so I will submit that too.

Were the weekly and monthly payroll reports on Moneysoft adequate for the ICB, did you select the Medium layout?  they don't show as much detail per employee as the Sage report.

Did you print the P11 PAYE and NI instead of a month end summary?

That is as far as I've got working through the Mock, so any other advice would be very welcome.

Thanks

Kate
