Level 3 Bookkeeping or Payroll?

I've already passed Level 1 & 2 Bookkeeping by distance learning so I can fit it around my part time job but I want to continue studying and can't decide if to do Payroll next or Level 3 Bookkeeping. Does it matter which one you do first? Would Payroll make more sense if I studied it after Level 3 or does it not matter?

I'd go for level 3 first and then move on to payroll. i'd concentrate on the core units first.

I just passed level 3 and have applied for my practice license and am now moving on to payroll.

I hope that helps and good luck with whatever way you choose.

Hi Minnie.

I would agree with Chris, get through all the standard modules first before starting on any of the additional ones.  Also remember that there is a two year limit between passing one level and being able to take the next one so you don't want to rush a core module by using some of that time up on an additional one.

Good luck!

Hello Minnie

Do you mean you have passed level 2 & 3 as level 1 is no longer offered?

I have studied to level 3 and currently studying for the Self Assessment module and will be studying payroll next. I bought all the 3 levels core courses as a package from kaplan, so I guess I will have to do the level 4 exam sometime if I don't want my money wasted.

The reason I haven't prioritised level 4 is I have met many Associate successful bookkeepers who have more than enough work they have had to employ others to help. I have worked for an associate bookkeeper who employed 3 staff. This means that eventhough passing level 4 will obviously enable one to offer more services, you could earn a decent living as an associate. So for me personally, level 4 will have to wait while I tackle the optional courses first. I am yet to get a good answer to the question 'How good will I be to a sole trader if I can't do their self assessment Tax Return?'
