Starting out as Self Employed

Hi

I was wondering if anyone who has started out as a self-employed bookkeeper could help me. My experience includes preparing accounts for the self-employed and partnerships but over the last 10 years or so I have worked in personal tax.

I took the ICB course to broaden my horizons on the employment front. Now that I have passed I am considering going down the route of self-employment as a bookkeeper. I have no experience as a bookkeeper only from what I have learnt on the course and it concerns me the lack of experience in this area.

Has anybody else started out with no experience and basically winged it (for want of better words) and how did you get on if you did?

Perhaps its just my lack of confidence I don't know but any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew, I am new to this and signed up on a career path course which is great but hard. Now As soon as I am qualified I intend to go self employed. I have been self employed for the past 12 years and it can be difficult but you just need to keep pushing boundaries.

You won't feel confident because there are loads of small hurdles to overcome along the way, but you take one hurdle at a time and you'll win the race- or at least finish it.

Start as small as you wish - trying to offer the services to micro businesses initially. Do your research, looking at services and prices others are charging and plan your attack based on this. Remenber your average small business owner is even less confident than you when it comes to what to do and if they ask you a question that blindsides you, don't show it and just say I'll get back to you on that and research and you'll be fine.

Go for it and don't look back.
