Want to self study - is this an option?

Hi there,

I joined ICB because I thought it was an option (like with IAB) to buy the text books, study at home and then book the exam once I'm ready...

I can find the books on external sites or through second hand shops but when I did a practice run of trying to book the exam the only ones available to book on the ICB website are the Level 3 Payroll exams which I haven't done.

Is it the case that if I want to study Level 2 Bookkeeping that I have to do this through an ATP - because if so I want to have my membership refunded and I will go and join IAB...

If someone could direct me to how I would book the ICB Level 2 exams that would be amazing :)

 Many thanks!!

Hi Amy.

I am half way through my level 3, i have achieved this through self study. I have bought several books including Frank Woods business accounting 13th edition, i have several AAT books which are not expensive to buy mine are Osbourne books, for my level 3 i also have the ICB book from Kaplan, i bought this from the ICB shop, it is not a course, they tell you that, and i am struggling to get enough on the club accounts.

If you have student registration with ICB you should be able to book your exams from My ICB, book exam. You will also need your own software for your B3 exam as it is computerised and also BA4 level 3 has a computerised part. If you have an email i could email you some good books in PDF if you like.

Regards,

Des.

Hi Dee

Thanks for your response, yes I would be really grateful if you could send me some books in pdf format.

My email is amy kimber@hotmail.co.uk

How did you find doing the exams all through self study? Was it tough?

Hi Amy,

I will get those sent to you no problem. I found it tough enough especially the level 3, the BA4 exam was quite difficult and it also has the computerised part as well. Not having an actual course make it harder because you don't know exactly what the exam covers in detail, the mock exams are very helpful as you learn what is expected of you and an insite into what the exam covers. I will give you more information when I email you.

Hi Amy, looks like you've got your study materials sorted!

Re booking the exam - I remember being presented with only the Level 3 Payroll exam too when I first joined up and looked at booking exams.  I'm studying through a training provider so it's a bit different for me as I have to book through my trainer, but when I just checked tonight I have a whole long list of exams available to book.  Not sure why they are there now but weren't before.  But it's still not everything.  If you have any problems with booking I'd recommend that you just phone up ICB - they are really helpful and the person who answers the phone usually just sorts out whatever you want.  Just have your ICB student number and credit card to hand!

By the way, I would STRONGLY suggest that you pay to do the ICB mock exams before the real thing - they are £10 each and really, really helpful as preparation.

Good luck.  Smile

Thank you both for your help! Des I haven't received those PDF documents yet - just in case it didn't work.

I went onto the site again and for some reason the first exam was showing there now so I'm guessing once I have sat that one I will be able to book the others.

Cheers for your advice :)

I'm also studying through an training provider but to be honest, I have barely had any tutor input even though I failed two of my level 2 exams. I'm just waiting to see how I did on my credit of B3.

Des, could I ask which off books you are using please, just wondering if they would be any use for level 3.

Thank you

Sabrina
