Software for MTD

Hi everyone,

I'd just like to put this out there, can I ask how many of you have actually sorted your software for MTD - I seem to be going around in a circle with it. I currently use Sage line 50 and was hoping that the MTD element would actually just be a 'bolt on' but the more I try and find out - the more confused I become. (I know I know, I can hear you all commenting on Sage but I suppose its what your used to.)

Most of the software companies seem to want you to pay a monthly fee for a cloud package but I prefer to 'buy outright' and then I know where I am. That's if they've got an MTD package at all. some seem to be still some way off being ready. I'm not panicking but would just like to be prepared for April 2019.

Any comments/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

My practice is Xero only, so we are 100% sorted for MTD.

Ultimately, it boils down to, whether the software provider is prepared to make their software MTD complaint or not and at what cost.

I am glad the technology advances such as MTD is clearing some dinosaur companies, far too long they have stopped invovating.

I think this is an excellent opportunity for us Bookkeepers, to approach our clients and say, they need to pay for the monthly licenses if they want modern compliant software.

All my clients pay for the Xero subscription, I am 100% transparent about this and keep it separate in my quote. Don't make the mistake of including it in your fees.

If prospective clients are the types that complain about the subscription price, I won't take them on, and funny enough they are the same clients that are happy to pay £5 for an exotic coffee everyday!

Hi CAP, I have done a fair bit of research on this. I have several small SAGE clients. If you want to stick with SAGE they offer the new(ish) internet subscription based service and also a desktop MTD compliant package which can be purchased. They had to provide this as most of their client base is desktop non subscription. Hope this helps, TimG

I use sage50 and it already has the facility to submit our VAT returns on line so why are they now saying that I have to buy an upgrade of sage which includes the MTD module?

Is this sage trying to make me pay for something I don't need?

Thanks

Hi CAP, the reason that you will need new software in April is because HMRC are changing the VAT submission link. This will be the only valid one for submissions. It is in a new format and HMRC will not provide any software. All the commercial providers are or have developed their software to incorporate the new link.

Most are also pushing the cloud based monthly subscription which is probably the future for all of us. SAGE have also developed their desktop one off payment software to deal with this but haven't advertised it.

You will need to buy new software, it isn't a scam but it is unfair.

Appologies for my typing/spelling,

Tim

Hi TimG

Ive now got the latest version of sage - so all good. wish we could have a practice run before it all comes into operation tho but I'm sure HMRC will have ironed the creases out with their 'invited parties' before April rolls around.

I guess it will be like payroll in 'real time' we'll all wonder what all the fuss was about when we've been doing it a few months.

regards

Hi

I agree with Cap, we will all wonder what the fuss is about.

To be fair to all the software companies.   Sage is not behaving any differently to cloud software who charge you a monthly subscription it is no different so do not be under any illusions that software companies are doing this for free.

I use Xero, Sage, FreeAgent and Quickbooks and I am a partner for all of them.

I have many clients who do not want to move away from sage desktop for many reasons.  MTD will be part of Sage Software Version 25 which is released in 10 days I think.  Software companies will all eventually raise their fees.

I invoice my clients for all software costs so that they are aware of how costly they are to us, it actually makes them more productive in making sure they have the right software for their company.  They look and become more aware of what each software can offer or does not offer.  As I have said a thousand times before they all have their good and bad points.

It is just like if you stop paying any cloud provider that holds your receipts, you need to keep paying them to have access to receipts.

This is why we keep all clients receipts separately as well, as very detailed reports for clients nominal ledgers extra, so that no software can tie our clients to their software.
