Tax deductible expenses

hi is preparing a tax return for a sole trader or for property rental income tax deductible? Just been reading some conflicting advice....

Hi Karen

Technically if you are preparing the personal side of the tax return you should apportion the cost between the personal and business/rental side. However I think you would find most accountants set the whole cost against the self employed/rental income.

i have always claimed it as an expense for my clients as it’s impossible to separate any personal element and the majority is generally all to do with their business but on another bookkeeping help forum people are saying it can’t be claimed..HMRC don’t seem to have any advice..
