Hi, I am having problems creatring an MTD Agents account.  Basically I have set up a Government gateway, got the Agents ID and then fill in the on line forms, until they ask about Self Assessment Agent Code.  I do not have one as I do not do self assessment or any compliance, i just do Management Accounts and VAT.  When I enter I do not have a Self Assessment Agent code it just says I can not go any further.

Has anyone else had this problem?  I am communicating with the VAT Digital team but they seem to be sending me round in circles.

Any help would be gratefully recived.

Hi

Go to HMRC site and click on agents at the bottom of list. Looks like you have to register for a vat for agents number first before you can do vat for clients. It expalins what you have to do reasonably well. Hope ths helps a bit

Is it possible they are asking for your own UTR?

”Hi Neil - I don't know whether or not you have sorted this out. I was looking at one the other day with someone as they were having difficulty. It appeared that the clients they had on their gateway account were not yet authorised so therefore it will not allow you to have an agent services account (they received an email when we questioned HMRC stating that if you do not have authorised clients you cannot set up an ASA). We will try again when they have had their authorisation code from their clients. not sure if this is relevant to you or not. Also, if you are not VAT registered yourself do you have an agents number https://www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-online-services-for-agents

Hi Louise and all those others that have answered.

I think i am almost there with getting anAgents Account up and running, it takes longer to do that advertised if you have never had to set up an Agents Account with HMRC.  Takes seven days + waiting for a LETTERand then another number of days to receive something else in the post!

If you have not set up yet and you need to do an MTD at for an end of April VAT return get working on it now is my advice.  It's a shame that all HMRC communciation can not be digital!
